Puppy acting weird after neuter surgery and tramadol. Is it normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 7 lbs

Hi. My 7 month old puppy just had his neutering surgery 3 days ago. He was initially given rimadyl for his pain, but today it was not helping. I called the vet and was given tramadol 50mg as his pain medicine. They scored the tablets into 3rds. I gave him what looked like a 18-20mg dose 4 hours ago & it knocked him out completely. He has been sleeping nonstop and when awake he has very poor motor function (can stand but cannot walk). He weighs 10 lbs & did not eat his dinner.

The dosage is fine, but it is a strong medications and these side effects are considered normal. Try not giving it more than once a day for now, next time he takes it the side effects will not be as bad.

Tramadol can cause some GI upset, however if he is off the meds and still appearing in pain or ill it may indicate something else going on. You can try a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to see if it settles his stomach. However, if he is actively vomiting, or the site of the neuter appears very red or swollen, then having him rechecked by your vet is best to rule out any problems.

Is my dog stumbling and hallucinating from pain meds after surgery?

Yes this can be a side effect of the gabapentin, or tramadol if your dog is on that for pain. I would lower the dose by half and speak with your veterinarian about it to see if they want you to stay on the lower dose, stop the medication, or switch to another pain medication. As the healing progresses you shouldn’t need as much medication and hopefully you can discontinue it soon as these are unwanted side effects. My dog got double the Tramadol dose after surgery. Is it serious?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. One 50mg tablet of Tramadol is still within the dose range for his weight. Reggie may be more sleepy and quiet for 8-12hrs but there should not be any more serious side effects.

Why is my dog so sleepy after neuter surgery and gabapentin?

The main side effect of this medication is sedation. This is typically dose related so the higher the dose the more likely sedation will be seen. It was a good idea to wait on the am dose if he was super sleepy. You may want to call your vet to ask about the dose and let them know how he is doing. It has a few uses but we do sometimes use it as an adjunct medication for pain control, although more often for chronic pain/nerve pain. My dog is acting strange after neuter surgery. Is he still in pain?

He may still be experiencing some pain and probably does not like the E-collar. You could call your vet and see if he/she could add an additional pain medication or change medications to see if it helps at all. Hopefully, he will be back to normal within a few days.

Is 150mg Tramadol safe for my 63lb dog after neuter surgery?

My dog is shaking days after surgery. Is her Tramadol causing it?

The wound looks perfect. Sonetimes they shake because of the after egfects of aneasthetic, but strong pain killers such as tramadol can make dogs feel strange. I would suggest stopping the tramadol now and see how she gets on.
