My dog is acting strange after neuter surgery. Is he still in pain?

IT could indeed be due to pain, the pain injection lasts for 24 hours, usually vets do give pain killers to take home for a couple days, if you think he is in too much pain you can request those from your vet. there is nothing you can give it at home as human pain killers are toxic to dogs.

From the photo, it looks like the incision is healing well but he has been licking the scrotum raw, and I am worried that part may be infected. I also worry that he is in pain from the surgery. Was he sent home with any pain medications? Even if he was, I would recommend having him re-evaluated by the vet today as he may need additional, or different pain medications. He may also need antibiotics. Please also put an e-collar (cone) on his head to prevent him from further licking the area. This should be worn continuously for at least 10 days after surgery to help the healing process. I hope this helps, and that Fender improves soon!

It sounds like Siete may actually be showing signs of pain if he is shaking. If you are seeing discharge at the incision site it would be a good idea to have a veterinarian check the area out to ensure it isn't infected. The vet can prescribe pain meds or antibiotics if necessary. An Elizabethan collar (e-collar) should be used to prevent licking. Hope he's feeling better soon!

Constantly dry heaving and trying to vomit are signs that your pup probably needs to see his doctor. Tail down and trying to reach his rear aren't complications of a neuter-they are a normal reaction to pain in the area. Please keep on his e collar (or "cone") at all times so that he cannot reach this area as it can get very swollen and painful if he is agitating it right after surgery. Hope this helps!

This really depends on what he is doing, and how long ago he was neutered. If the surgery was today, then he will likely be feeling strange and not himself for the whole evening. Depending on what kind of anesthetic drugs and pain medications he was given, he could be really whiny, needy, or just laying around. If he is really agitated, or trying to lick constantly, or seems really painful, then he may not have been given adequate pain medication and I would call your after-hours vet right away for further help. He may not be interested in food or water, and this can be normal, just for tonight. Tomorrow he should be eating and acting normally. If he is laying around and won't get up even when you stimulate him, this may be an emergency and I would call a vet right away, as this is certainly not normal. With my neuters, I always send them home the same day, fully awake, and with extra pain medication to go home with. Hope that helps!

Most dogs will lay down comfortably immediately after surgery, but certainly by the next day. Some dogs are resistant to e-collars and may experience behavioral changes and difficulty/reluctance moving as a result. Groot may also be experiencing pain that is not controlled with his current pain medication. Try taking the e-collar off while you are directly supervising Groot to see if he is willing to comfortably sit or lay down. If he is, you could consider looking for alternative collars to prevent licking of the incision, such as Bite-Not collars or inflatable "donut" collars. If he is still reluctant to move without the e-collar in place, I would strongly recommend calling Groot's vet first thing in the morning to discuss additional pain medications or adjust doses of his current medication. It's been about 10 days since Murphy's surgery, so he should be pretty well healed and not in pain. He may be bored. I hope you have only been giving pain medications prescribed by the vet. If you have been giving him human pain medications, that may be the problem as many of those are toxic to dogs. If you have been giving him human pain medications, take him into a vet now.
