How can I protect my puppy's leg splint from urine when I'm away?

I'm wondering if sling walking or propping him up using towels might be an option depending on the type of surgery that he had - if he's able to posture in a semi-normal position he might be more willing to urinate. Hi and thank you for your question! A cone would be best but a belly band could also work. Spray would not be recommended. That could irritate the incision. A baby onesie put on him will help. Not only is it cute, but it will keep him him licking his incision area. I hope this helps!

I'm so sorry to hear Sasha got into an accident. Most likely she isn't urinating due to the pain/discomfort in her leg and the difficulty in getting in "position" with the splint. If she isn't on any pain medications, I would recommend contacting her veterinarian to discuss what pain control options she may have. Depending on which leg it is, you can also use a towel as a sling underneath her to help support her weight and allow her to urinate. There is the possibility depending on the location/extent of her injuries that the nerves that control her bladder were damaged in the accident or the bladder itself damaged. If she continues to not be able to urinate, she would need to be evaluated to ensure her bladder is intact and her nerve control is nornal. Good luck!

I love that you have a deaf and blind dog! Some people may not want an animal with those disabilities, but they can be such great dogs. And this is a great question. It's not ideal that the incisions come into contact with wet pavement. The incisions should stay as dry as possible while healing. You can put a water proof bandage over them when you take him outside to protect them. I wool not wipe them down with a dog wipe, as that will make them wet again. Covering them is the best option :-)

There is nothing you can put on his skin for protection but you should be wiping him off with a wet wash cloth or a hypoallergenci baby wipe every time he urinates. Keep the area clean and dry. If he is developing a rash, you may ask your veterinarian about a medicated shampoo or wipe to use at home. I hope this helps.

Hello, you can purchase a small ecollar for a kitten and cut it down to the appropriate size. If that isn’t an option, then a sock worn as a body suit with holes cut for back end and legs is a good alternative (or baby onesie) though I’m not sure if it would effectively cover the area you’re trying to keep him from accessing. If it’s the feet and lower legs, then kids socks put over the feet and secured at the top with medical grade tape may work. You just need to be careful about how tight the tape is (need to be very careful to not impact blood flow) and pay attention to hair loss or skin irritation. Change any clothing or sock covering every day to inspect the underlying areas, and follow up with your vet as they directed. I hope this helps!
