Is a sock okay for dog incision to stop licking instead of a cone?

Hello, you can purchase a small ecollar for a kitten and cut it down to the appropriate size. If that isn’t an option, then a sock worn as a body suit with holes cut for back end and legs is a good alternative (or baby onesie) though I’m not sure if it would effectively cover the area you’re trying to keep him from accessing. If it’s the feet and lower legs, then kids socks put over the feet and secured at the top with medical grade tape may work. You just need to be careful about how tight the tape is (need to be very careful to not impact blood flow) and pay attention to hair loss or skin irritation. Change any clothing or sock covering every day to inspect the underlying areas, and follow up with your vet as they directed. I hope this helps!

Hello. Poor baby. You can use an Elizabethan cone to keep her from reaching the area. There are the rigid plastic ones which might stress her out, so I would find one of the soft, flexible ones, or one that blows up like a soft neck collar. They also make body suits for dogs that can be used after surgeries & to protect wounds. Hi and thank you for your question! A cone would be best but a belly band could also work. Spray would not be recommended. That could irritate the incision. A baby onesie put on him will help. Not only is it cute, but it will keep him him licking his incision area. I hope this helps!

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do not think those pillow ones on the neck work very well. But the soft-sided cones you can certainly use. The hard plastic ones are not really recommended. Dogs don’t resist the soft ones as much as the hard ones. Just make sure that the cone is long enough to go past the end of her nose or she wilI still be able to lick at the incision. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Yes. Make Romeo wear the collar again. Some pets remember that there was something they wanted to lick and they will do so at the first opportunity. Although he cannot injure the incision anymore, he could cause an infection if he licks it too much. Over the next week you can gradually start to give him more freedom but you should not leave him unsupervised without the collar until things are back to normal. As far as I can see the wound looks fine at this stage. Cone should be kept all times unfortunately, as licking can delay healing process and open up skin margins. There is no acceptable amount of licking, the wound can open up any time. I would recommend a plastic cone to go around Kali's head to prevent her from licking / chewing at the sore. She will likely need an ointment more effective than neosporin. I would recommend buying a plastic cone at the pet store and using an ointment such as Zymox topica ointment. If the sore worsens I would then schedule an examination with your veterinarian so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made.
