How do I keep my dog's paws safe and healthy during winter walks?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Great question. There are many ice melt products that are safe for pets. Non-toxic and non-irritating. You can also buy booties for Wolverine which would protect his paws while he is outside. Some dogs won't wear these so it's going to be a trial and error. Also, you can rinse and wipe his paws off after he goes outside to remove any ice melt that he stepped on and remove any snow that is stuck to his paws or hair coat. Again, great question. If his paw pads seem irritated you could try Musher’s Secret. You might want to put baby socks on his paws (if he’ll tolerate them) until the boots come in when he’s going outdoors.

It is likely that the cold conditions, low humidity, and salt on the ground has caused his paws to dry out and become cracked/sore. Consider looking into getting winter booties for Kiba. Ruffwear makes wonderful dog boots for the cold weather. You can also try a paw protectant like Musher's Secret to help prevent injury to his paws.

If you are going to go outside and it is very cold out, or if you will be going for long walks or on colder surfaces (not snow but ice or cold pavement) then booties are a good idea as they can get frostbite and wounds from cold on their feet. Poor pup! The snow, ice, and salt on the ground to melt the ice can be very hard on a dog's paws. While he is at home, you can put a little vaseline on his paws to help the chapping. Put a sock over his paws to keep him for licking at the vaseline, and put some tape very loosely on the top of the sock to keep it on. You may have to put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking at the socks, and you can get one from your vet's clinic or a pet store. When you are walking him outside, I recommend getting Musher's Secret. That will help protect his paws from the snow, ice, and salt. You can get it online or in a pet store. As for his nose, he may have snow nose, which is when a dog's nose turns lighter in color in months when there isn't much sunlight. It should become darker again when spring and summer returns.

Hi. Sounds like it is freezing!! That's great that you are protecting Brody's feet. Yes, this is safe, but I'm not sure it helps with warmth. But yes, safe if he links his feet. You can also wipe his feet with a warm moist washcloth in between as well to help discourage linking and contact. Good luck. Stay warm

The problem with vaseline is that if Tasha licks it off, it will cause GI upset in the form of vomiting and diarrhea. Due to that, I would not recommend using it, and instead would use the Invisible Boot cream.
