Homemade food can be great if done appropriately but it is very easy to get an improper balance of nutrients. For this reason, many vets recommend consulting with a veterinary nutritionist service, such as your state's vet school nutrition department, or alternatively you can use the website https://secure.balanceit.com/ which can help formulate a homemade diet appropriate for your dog! Great questions! Properly balanced home cooked diets can be a great addition to Kiba's diet. However, many dogs do not tolerate frequent diet changes and can develop vomiting and diarrhea as a result. If you decide that you would like to offer home cooked food with the kibble, consider consistently mixing the two diets together. However, it is extremely difficult to make the meals nutritionally balanced. For this reason, I recommend using a recipe provided by a veterinary nutritionist. My vet said no mixing dry and fresh food. Is that true for dogs?

Well, technically, a dog can eat a whole bunch of things on the same day! But the better question is SHOULD they eat all of those things. I prefer my patients to be an a commercial dog food for 90% of their caloric intake. This ensures that they are taking in a balanced diet. When you start to add chicken or vegetables to their diet and feed less of the dog food, they may not be taking in the correct amount of vitamins and minerals that their bodies need. It is also very easy to feed too many calories if you add these foods to their normal dog food.
