My pregnant dog has white discharge. Is ampicillin safe for puppies?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature American Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 30 lbs

My dog is 17 days bred and has a milky white discharge. Should I give her ampicillin? Will it hurt the puppies?

Milky white discharge from the mammary glands is not uncommon in pregnant dogs, but typically occurs during the last couple of weeks of pregnancy. If it coming from her vaginal area, I would be concerned she has the beginnings of a uterine infection. Ampicillin has not yet been studied in pregnant dogs and therefore is not considered safe to use.

I would take Riley into see your veterinarian as soon as possible to rule out a uterine infection .
