My pregnant dog has bloody discharge. Is it pyometra or infection?

These are signs possibly related to a uterine infection/inflammation called pyometra. Personally I would start an antibiotic treatment (amoxycillin is harmless for puppies). If the discharge continue it may be worthy to discuss c -section. This can be a fatal turn right on Rio Grande St. infection leading to sepsis turn left on superior and death if left untreated. While antibiotics can decrease signs It will typically not fully clear the infection, which will cotinue to recur and worsen. If Izzy has a foul smelling bloody discharge she needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Some discharge can be normal during pregnancy, but the best thing to do is to take her to a vet who deals with canine reproduction for a full exam. I would do a vaginal cytology and/or culture to see if the discharge is normal, and take xrays or do an abdominal ultrasound to see how far along she is and to make sure the feti look normal, and that there is no sign of gas in the uterus which can indicate dead puppies. She should be far enough along to see heartbeats and count a heart rate on the puppies, which is the best indication of puppy health. Hello, Tisay may be having an infection of her uterus (pyometra). She should be seen by a veterinarian today and may require surgery and medications to remove her uterus. A miscarriage typically does not cause bad smelling discharge although it can, but a pyometra may be far more common to cause the clinical signs your are seeing. Best of luck and hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! How old is your dog? As dogs age there are chronic changes to the uterine lining, it becomes thickened and sometimes even cystic. Metritis just means inflammation of the uterine lining and there are many causes most of which have nothing to do with pregnancy. If she had purulent discharge from her vulva that indicates an infection. A pyometra means infection (puss) in the uterus. If she responded to antibiotics I would assume she has a pyometra. My best advice is to have her spayed. It is the best thing for your dog. If she had discharge then the pyometra is open. If there was no discharge it is considered closed. I wish you the best!

With these symptoms I worry that your dog may have a pyometra instead of being pregnant. Pyometras typically develop around 3-6 weeks after they go into heat and present as bloody discharge, lethargy, abdominal swelling, etc. I would recommend that she is seen by a veterinarian who can perform an ultrasound to make sure she isn't suffering from an infection.

Your poor pup! If she isn't spayed, I would be very concerned that she has a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment, and it would cause a white discharge as well as vomiting. It sounds like your vet may have been suspicious she had a pyometra and tried treating it medically with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Unfortunately the medical route often isn't successful, and surgery is needed to treat it. This means spaying her. I would take her back into the vet immediately, as this is a medical emergency.
