Pregnant dog unresponsive, kicking. Is she in labor distress?

I'm really worried about Jimmy being so weak and unable to stand, especially being pregnant, and I'm worried about the blood coming from her mouth. She may not be eating enough to sustain her energy demands, or her electrolytes could be abnormal and need supplementation. She should absolutely be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. On your way there, you can rub Karo syrup or something with a high sugar content on her gums to help increase her blood sugar in case that is low. If she doesn't get medical attention, she and/or her puppies could die. I hope this is helpful.

That can last up to 18 hours, so keep monitoring her. If 18 hours pass and she has not progressed to the second stage of labor (contractions and giving birth), get her into a vet immediately. If you are sure she was bred and is pregnant, being in stage 2 labor for 8 hours is serious for Abby and her puppies. If you aren't sure she is pregnant she could have an infected uterus (pyometra) and the discharge is puss. A pyometra is a surgical emergency. I recommend that you take Abby to an emergency clinic right away to have her evaluated. I wish you the best of luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Sakura! If you think Sakura is in labor it is likely too late but she would need to be seen by a Vet right away. Sometimes progesterone and terbutaline can be used. Sadly if she is aborting or in labor too early then it usually indicates something is very wrong with the puppies, hormonally with Sakura or with her uterus (infection) and things are going to progress. I would suggest a specialty hospital or close Veterinary School where they may have reproduction specialists. I wish you all the best!

Some bitches stop eating during the last twenty-four hours before labor, and may act differently. The rectal temperature will drop below 100F (37.8C), usually an hour or two before whelping. I would keep a close eye on her tonight to see if she progresses to the second stage of labor. Second stage labor is the stage of delivery. She will start to strain. If straining continues for two hours without any signs of a watery discharge ("water breaking") or puppies, you should contact your veterinarian. Most dogs experience no complications with delivery. First time mothers should be attended by their owners until at least one or two puppies have been born. I hope this is helpful!

Hello, and thank you for using Pet Coach. I am sorry to hear about Charlene, and I too am very worried. From her history, I would recommend that Charlene get checked out by a vet immediately. Since she is not yet nursing, it is unlikely that she is low in blood calcium (what causes milk fever), but it is still possible. There could be other causes for her odd behavior, including infection or other electrolyte abnormalities. After being examined by the vet, they will likely recommend bloodwork to see what is going on internally. You should also discuss with the vet if Charlene is on the appropriate dog food and nutritional supplements for her stage of pregnancy knowing her history of hypocalcemia. Dogs with a history of milk fever are prone to having it with each litter and you will need to be very vigilant once the puppies are born.

I am sorry to hear that. It sounds like she may be painful. Call your and see about getting her in for a recheck exam. If there is an emergency vet near you, I would recommend that you take her in to be seen. Unfortunately without seeing her and without knowing if she's received any medications at home, I cannot advise you to give her anything at home to help, she just needs to be seen by a vet.
