My pregnant Rottweiler isn't eating after vet visit. What should I do?

You are definitely stuck in a pretty difficult situation here. Obviously as a pregnant bitch, Jenny really needs to continue to eat in order to be healthy enough to carry her pregnancy. If she is ill, she might require medications to make her feel better. The main problem with this is that there are very, very few medications that are considered safe and effective for pregnant and nursing animals. There is only one oral antibiotic in America that is readily administered to pregnant dogs, and it is called Clavamox. It is a penicillin based antibiotic. My assumption is that your vet likely gave a penicillin based injection. If this has not helped at all, she should probably be reassessed, placed on some fluids, and have her fetuses' viability checked with ultrasound. An ultrasound should be able to detect fetal heart beat, so if they appear weak or not present at all than this could be an indicator of an infectious process causing abortion. If your current vet does not have an ultrasound, you may want to go to a clinic that has this modality to give your dog the best treatment possible. Hope this helps!

I would be very concerned about her, she appears very unwell and weak and this could put both her and pregnancy at risk. I would be afraid of a serious infection possibly from the mating ir a viral disease such as distemper. She needs urgent fluid therapy for rehydration and an ultrasound exam and blood tests to assess the health if the pups and also Indra

It sounds as Harry is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Poor girl. 5 days is a long time for a pregnant dog to go without eating. At this point the best advise is to take her in to your vet to get looked at. Something could be wrong with the pregnancy and she needs to get tested to determine if an infection is present or what the case may be, and then treated. I hope your girl Kiki is going to be ok. Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. If he is not eating his dog food I would offer some chicken and rice and see if he is at all interested in eating that. If not, I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian. With his age, he is at risk for contracting viral infections such as distemper and parvo virus. I would have him tested for Parvo virus if he continues to decline and also test his blood to see if there are any abnormalities. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Just keep offering a variety of things to see what she likes best. It may be a good idea to have her examined by a vet to see if she is sick, anemic, low blood pressure, or having any other medical issues with her pregnancy.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This is a quite generic but concerning presentation. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. It could be related to the pregnancy as the puppies are occupying more space in the abdomen. The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food. A check up is needed if inappetence lasts for more than 24hours.
