My pregnant dog's nipples are crusty and swollen. Is this normal?

It looks normal. In some dogs nipples get crusty with black, thickened skin around them. You may be able to clean the nipples with baby wipes but if the skin underneath looks very red and inflamed after that, it is better to leave it.

I am wondering if Lokita might be experiencing a pseudopregnancy. Sometimes dogs will have all of the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy and can even produce milk without being pregnant. It’s important to make sure she isn’t truly pregnant even though you keep a close eye on her. I’d recommend having your vet examine her - they may want to perform an ultrasound to make sure she isn’t pregnant and if they are suspicious of pseudopregnancy they can discuss treatment.

It could be mastitis but it is hard to tell from the photos. Usually mastitis is warm to the touch and the teat is red/swollen/painful and there may be yellowish/green discharge. You can do warm compresses on it if you think it is mastitis to see if that will help but being that she is pregnant it may be best to have your vet check it out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hello. If she recently had her heat (about 1 month ago) then she chould be having psuedopregnancy. This is not a concern unless she develops a mastitis. If the nipples and glands are soft, not hot or cold, and not sore to touch, and if the milk is white and not clear, yellow, green, or has a bad smell, then you can monitor her. If you are noticing any yellow/green/clear discharge from the nipples then you need to get her to a vet ASAP. Prevent this in the future by having her spayed. Good luck with your little girl.

It is difficult to say from the picture, it would be advisable to have a check up so that she can have general check up and also that she is checked for milk, as sometimes dogs can start producing milk as a result of a phantom pregnancy.. Having said this she is still very young so this normally happens after at least a couple of seasons ! I would say yo have her checked over to put your mind at rest ! Seeing that Cinnamon is nearing the end of her pregnancy and should be delivering puppies within the next week, her body is preparing itself to feed the puppies when they are born. Her colostrum / milk production is high right now hence the milk leaking from the nipples. This is common and is nothing to be concerned about. Her swollen vulva is also common as this is a change due to the hormones in her body during the pregnancy. Ok. It is likely she has some milk letdown and it dried around her nipples. I wouldn't worry about this, unless there is obvious irritation/redness around her nipples. She will clean herself. Most cats don't need assistance from a vet when they go into labor, and do quite well on their own.
