Pregnant dog's milk is yellowish. Is it colostrum or something else?

Hello, sometimes milk may look a little opaque, but it should not look completely yellow. Signs of an infection would include dark colored mammary glands that are painful, firm, and warm to the touch. If any of these are noted, then Lucy should be seen immediately by her veterinarian. You may be able to feel puppies towards the end of the pregnancy, but most often they are difficult to feel as they are surrounded by placental fluid. An much more accurate way to detect puppies is with an x-ray or even an ultrasound. Have Lucy evaluated by her veterinarian to make sure that she does not have an infection of her mammary glands and/or to check for how many puppies she is carrying. Hope this helps and best of luck.

IF she is having contractions then she is probably coming into labor very soon, the yellow fluids from the vaginal area are not uncommon at this stage, you should probably expect puppies in the next 24 hours.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Answering your questions: 1. It is not normal to produce milk 3 weeks before giving birth. Some dogs start producing milk 2-3 days before the labour but not longer than that. Green / thick discharge suggest mammary gland infection, not natural milk production. 2. Mammary gland infection is almost always caused by bacteria from the skin getting into the mammary tissue. I do not think it is related to eating a worm by Kaya. 3. To avoid mastitis you should keep the nipples clean. You should wipe them with baby wipes 2-3 times a day. Also, Kaya should be on good quality food and get exercised regularly. Once she has the puppies you should make sure that they feed from each nipple, latch them on the nipples that are 'full' or express milk from the large and very hard nipples. Using antibiotics prophetically is not recommended, but if Kaya is producing green, thick discharge she will need a course of antibiotics now.

I'm concerned that Coco is having this heavy discharge and this may not be normal. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain. I'd have her seen by a vet now for this to make sure everything is ok.

You can also [take her temperature](https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-take-your-pet-s-temperature) twice daily at the same time each day to determine when she will go into labor A dog’s normal temperature is between 100 to 102.5F degrees. Her temperature may fluctuate during this time, but once her temperature falls below 99 degrees, she should go into labor in the next 24 hours.

It may mean Pinkie didn't get pregnant when she mated with your male, or she could be pregnant or suffering a false pregnancy. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain. I'd take her into the vet in a couple of weeks to see if she is pregnant or not. Best of luck.

A moderate amount of clear, sticky vaginal discharge is normal for a pregnant dog, especially close to delivery of the puppies. The increased hormone levels cause an increase in the lubrication produced by the vagina. As long as there is no evidence of dark green color in the discharge, a milky or creamy appearance or foul odor no treatment is needed. It does not mean that she will give birth earlier.
