Is my pregnant dog's loose back end and smaller size normal?

It is possible. the only way to know for sure is to have her x-rayed by your veterinarian. This would be recommended anyway so you know how many pups to expect. Since she is so close, start monitoring her body temperature. Use a rectal thermometer with sterile lube. Normal temp ranges from 100 F to 102.5 F. In most cases, labor will begin within 24 hours of a drop below 100 F.

This is not necessarily normal but it is also may not be a concern. To be safe I would recommend having her examined by your veterinarian. They can also check her stool for parasites which could be passed on to puppies, and you can discuss a plan for monitoring her pregnancy.

Often dogs will look bigger or smaller based on if they have just eaten, and what position they are lying in, so I wouldn't worry too much about how 'big she looks'. I would make sure you are feeding her a good high-quality puppy food, canned food is best to make sure she has good water intake. Also, make sure she has a nesting area where she can go when she whelps (gives birth). She may not be pregnant, the date may be incorrect or she may not have a large litter. Ideally, she should be physically examined by your veterinarian. Pregnancy can be confirmed via palpation, blood test or abdominal x-ray or ultrasound. The imaging may diagnose any other underlying condition as well.

Each dog carries a pregnancy differently, and some dogs will have larger stomachs that others. There is no specific size a pregnant dog's belly should be, so as long as Snow is eating and drinking, isn't losing weight, and isn't very lethargic, I wouldn't be concerned about the size of her belly. I'm not sure if you have had her seen by a vet to confirm her pregnancy, but I do recommend having her seen by a vet if you have not. Best of luck!

You can find significant fluid retention in dogs near birthing time. It is similar to the swelling you see in human's feet. If she seems to be unwell or off form I would consider a vet visit as a precaution to check her hear and blood pressure. Most likely it is just a bit of retention due to the pressure on her lymphatic system.

Usually, the body temperature does go back up into the normal range before labor actually begins - so this sounds normal :) I would expect that she will probably begin having puppies within the next 24 hours, based on what you're describing here.
