Why can I feel my pregnant dog's spine and pelvis? Is she too thin?

I recommend getting her seen by your vet for an exam and bloodwork. She could have parasites, also, voracious appetite without weight gain or weight loss is a sign of diabetes. It could be that the pups have worn her out. She should have been eating puppy food the whole time she was pregnant and nursing. If she was not, this could be partly responsible for her thin condition. Your vet will give you a treatment plan, based on the findings.

I'm sorry that Ginger is not feeling well. It is concerning that she is not eating well for the past two days. You could try to feed her a mixture of plain boiled chicken and plain white rice to see if this will stimulate her appetite. If she does start eating it and there are no other signs of illness, then I would start to transition her to a puppy food. She should eat puppy food throughout her pregnancy and while she's nursing the puppies. If she still refuses to eat, i do think you need to take her to the veterinarian. They will most likely recommend doing some blood testing and possibly x-rays of her abdomen as there are many things that can cause a decreased appetite. Hello. There is no need to change her food initially. Just feed the best food you can afford. The last few weeks before the puppies are born, switch her to a good puppy food as this will give her more calories she will need until the puppies are weaned & eating on their own. You can have your veterinarian ultrasound her abdomen or take an x-ray to confirm pregnancy & her hip dysplasia will not hurt her pregnancy, although this condition can be inherited by her puppies. Hello. A dog should not put on weight just from one meal, but if it was a fatty one, she might show some distention from gas. Since she is an older girl, it might be a good idea to have her looked at by your veterinarian to see if she is indeed pregnant. An x-ray or ultrasound would show the appearance of any fetuses in her uterus & give a heads up if she were to run into any difficulties once she goes into labor. Hello. While the stool is not altogether abnormal, I can see your concerns. The first thing to do is take a sample to your veterinarian for a parasite analysis. You want to make sure Soska is not harboring intestinal worms that can be transmitted to her puppies. In the meantime, switch her to a bland diet for a few days. I use 75% white rice & 25% white chicken breast. A little low fat cottage cheese is OK. I would also start her on a good probiotic like Purina's FortiFlora. This is available over the counter. If so, these are love handles, just a bit of excess fat from a loving mom. Nothing to worry about here. If you can not afford veterinary care for Genesis' leg problems, then start her on a human or dog glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate supplement. I would give one human pill a day. Take care.

I do not recommend raw or home cooked diets as they are deficient in the appropriate nutrients unless balanced by a nutritionist.
