My 4-month Pomeranian puppy has a bald spot and sheds. Is this normal?

I just noticed that my puppy has a bold spot on his back, i didn't see it before. And he is shredding profusely. Is it normal for pomeranian 4,5 months old?

I am sorry to hear about Norik! We can see shedding at certain times of year, especially when the seasons are changing, however we would not expect a bald patch of skin as a result of this normal shedding. If Norik has a bald spot we would worry about things such as a hot spot forming (a bacterial infection of the skin), a fungal infection such as ringworm, ectoparasites, or other disorder. I would recommend Norik have an exam by his vet to check the patch of bald skin so we can figure out why he is losing this hair and treat appropriately!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lily Cruz! Is Lily scratching? I would have her seen by your Vet. The most common causes of excessive shedding and areas of balding are: demodex (non-contagious mite), ring worm and a skin infection. Demodex can be easily treated with one of the oral flea/tick preventatives (Nexgard, Simparica or Bravecto). Skin infections are treat with antibiotics or anti-fungals if it is yeast. Ring worm can be a bit more complicated. I do not think it is normal shedding because she shouldn't have areas that are thin or balding. I wish you the best!

My 8-month-old Pomeranian is losing hair. Is it allergies or alopecia?

The only way to know if this is truly alopecia X is to either do a skin biopsy or to do a short trial of melatonin to see if he grows the hair back while on treatment. However, alopecia X typically only affects adult dogs age 1-10, so it isn't my first suspicion. I would rule out Demodexx mites and allergies (especially if the skin is red or crusty) first with a skin scrape and response to allergy medication. I hope you get to the bottom of Dudu's hair loss. Why is my Pomeranian growing a patch of black fur on his back?

Hi and thank you for your question! Sometimes dog hair can change in color and texture when they age just like human hair can. I wouldn't worry too much about the hair change unless it appears like he is loosing fur, the skin around the fur is red, inflamed, scabbing, or infected-you will want to see your veterinarian if that is the case.

Why is my puppy shedding, has bald spots, and red bumps on belly?

Hello, sorry to hear about Malik. It sounds like he could potentially have allergies based on the red bumps, bald spot, and shedding. Dogs may develop allergies to the environment, food, or even fleas. He should be seen by his veterinarian if this behavior continues, or he begins to scratch, and if he continues to lose hair. Alternatively, this could be an early signs of a respiratory or GI infection. Have Malik evaluated soon if he is not doing better of if you note any other signs to include a loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, sneezing, or coughing. Hope this helps and best of luck.

If, when the hair comes out there is no bald spot, then this is not concerning. If a bald spot remains, then you should have your puppy examined by a veterinarian, as it may have a mite or bacterial infection or a fungal infection.

It would not be normal for a 4 week old puppy to lose a lot of hair. If it seems excessive and/or he has bald areas then he could have mites. ringworm, or a skin infection. Your vet can do some testing to help determine the cause and treat.
