Is it normal for my puppy's hair to come out when I pull it?

It's normal to lose some hair during brushing, just like we do when we brush our hair. This is normal and healthy, as we are removing the dead hair as we brush. Be gentle brushing your puppy so that she enjoys the process. Have fun!

It is not normal for a pet to have bald spots, but it is normal for a pet to shed. If Cookie has bald spots, then the top causes for this are: Flea allergies or Demodexx mites. Poor Daisy. The process of hair and dry skin being removed at the same time is called easily epilated hair, and this indicates that the skin itself is infected with either bacteria or a fungal infection. Puppies especially have a weakened and still developing immune system so they are susceptible to infections pretty regularly. Duoxo shampoo may help with this. This is my #1 shampoo line that is available without a veterinary prescription and has antibacterial and/or antifungal properties to it. However if the skin is still not better after 2-3 weeks of regular shampoo baths then it's best to get Daisy evaluated by your vet for stronger prescription medication to treat for the underlying skin infection. I am sorry to hear about Norik! We can see shedding at certain times of year, especially when the seasons are changing, however we would not expect a bald patch of skin as a result of this normal shedding. If Norik has a bald spot we would worry about things such as a hot spot forming (a bacterial infection of the skin), a fungal infection such as ringworm, ectoparasites, or other disorder. I would recommend Norik have an exam by his vet to check the patch of bald skin so we can figure out why he is losing this hair and treat appropriately!

It would not be normal for a 4 week old puppy to lose a lot of hair. If it seems excessive and/or he has bald areas then he could have mites. ringworm, or a skin infection. Your vet can do some testing to help determine the cause and treat.

Puppies are at risk for mites like demodex, ring worm, bacterial infections. I would recommend an exam with your vet and a skin scrape to look for mites. Some mites are contagious to people like sarcoptic mange. Some mites are not. Hope that helps

I would recommend taking Peanut to the vet to check for mites. They are a common cause of hair loss in puppies, and if the skin becomes infected, there can be bleeding, pus, and a foul smell. The vet will do a thorough examination and can scrape the skin to look for the mites under a microscope to determine the best course for treatment.
