Why is my Pomeranian dry heaving frequently but not vomiting?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Achilles may have a respiratory infection called kennel cough (or tracheobronchitis). It is like a cold with a cough humans get and causes a tickle in the throat and dry heaving type behavior. I recommend taking him to a vet for a confirmation. They may need to take a xray of his chest to make sure its not pneumonia or something stuck in his throat. If it is kennel cough, he needs medications to prevent pneumonia and to help his cough. Chronic heaving / gagging can be caused by problems with larynx or trachea, like laryngeal paralysis, chronic infection / inflammation, laryngeal mass, mass on the neck and more. A visit at your local vets is recommended to establish diagnosis and implement treatment as required. Your vet may want to examine the throat under sedation and/or take radiographs of the neck and chest.

Dogs rarely cough due to hairballs since they do not lick and groom themselves as cats do. Instead, a more common cause of a short-lived gagging cough, particularly in a small breed dog, is a collapsing trachea. Other possible causes of Bailey's cough include heart disease, heartworm disease, chronic bronchitis, kennel cough, canine influenza, among other issues. I recommend taking Bailey to her vet for a physical exam and chest/neck x-rays to try to get to the root of this problem in case more immediate treatment is needed. It is possible that Odin has kennel cough, which would cause him to hack and dry heave. This is a highly contagious respiratory infection. It is self limiting, but it can take up to three to four weeks for symptoms to resolve. I would have Odin seen by a vet today if possible. Even though it is self limiting, the vet may prescribe medications that can help with his symptoms.

Citirizine is an antihistamine that can be helpful if a dog has some allergies or even mild airway irritation. If Shero is coughing so much that he is bringing up phlegm and mucus I would start to worry about a respiratory infection that may need treatment with antibiotics. In these little tiny puppies I tend to treat more aggressively since their immune systems are not fully mature and they can't always fight off infections or other illnesses. I also worry that little sick dogs and cats can become hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) if they are not able to keep down their food. This can happen if a puppy is coughing and regurgitates his stomach contents a few too many times. I would get Shero back to a veterinarian since his signs are worsening. They may recommend bloodwork and possibly chest radiographs. I hope this helps!
