My playful dog and shy, slightly aggressive dog aren't friends?

You're right that there can sometimes be problems when introducing two dogs for the first time, especially if either of them has any history of aggression towards other dogs. Walking them in neutral areas away from his normal routine and territory can help to get dogs used to each other in a less confrontational manner and can help in such cases, I would recommend muzzling both before allowing free play to prevent injury initially. Do not leave them unsupervised or loose until they are more accepting of each other

It sounds like Bruno has not been socialized well with other dogs, which does tend to make it difficult to introduce him to other dogs. Try introducing the dogs in neutral territory - like a park. If it's not their house, then they will be much less likely to fight. While having the muzzle on does add security, it can make the dog act aggressive. Same can happen if you are holding the dog or putting tension on the leash. The best and safest way to introduce them would be at a neutral place with a fence inbetween them. Let Bruno off lead to explore the other dog. If he's aggressive right away, then it won't work. If he's not aggressive and seems interested, then the next step would be to introduce them while walking on lead or in an open area off-lead. This is a bit more risky, so just make sure you're nearby to break up a fight, but don't be overbearing (i.e. holding the lead tight). I hope that helps and all goes well.

If the two are a bonded pair, I would consider trying to introduce the more aggressive one toe the other animals alone without her buddy. See if this makes any difference - she may have been being protective. Unfortunately, this doesn't necessarily resolve your problem. While I hate to say it, you only just got these guys and they may not be best suited for your home. If I were you, I would contact the shelter or rescue from which you acquired them and let them know what is happening. Usually, if the place is reputable, they will understand and take the dogs back in order to place them somewhere else. Rescuing an animal should not become a big project for you if it was not meant to be one in the first place. If you decide that you are going to keep them anyway, they will need to be introduced to your other animals very slowly and carefully, and under strict supervision for an extended period of time. The use of positive reinforcement training will hopefully allow them to coexist at some point. There are no guarantees however. Hope this helps. Unfortunately it can be very difficult or even impossible to socialize them so that they will never fight. If they are both more dominant as you describe then allowing them to play together could result in a serious fight and injury. It is probably best to not allow them to play together in the future. If they must be together at times then they should both be leashed and wear basket muzzles to prevent injury. A dog can be easily trained to wear a comfortable basket muzzle by allowing them to put them self in a muzzle with treats.
