My dog might fight. How do I introduce her to a new dog safely?

It sounds like Bruno has not been socialized well with other dogs, which does tend to make it difficult to introduce him to other dogs. Try introducing the dogs in neutral territory - like a park. If it's not their house, then they will be much less likely to fight. While having the muzzle on does add security, it can make the dog act aggressive. Same can happen if you are holding the dog or putting tension on the leash. The best and safest way to introduce them would be at a neutral place with a fence inbetween them. Let Bruno off lead to explore the other dog. If he's aggressive right away, then it won't work. If he's not aggressive and seems interested, then the next step would be to introduce them while walking on lead or in an open area off-lead. Walking them in neutral areas away from his normal routine and territory can help to get dogs used to each other in a less confrontational manner and can help in such cases, I would recommend muzzling both before allowing free play to prevent injury initially. If there is a neutral place in the house that way there is no territory problems it would be best. You can keep them both on leashes to control the situation. make sure all food and beddings are separate also. Once they get used to living together and no one fees jealous then they will be fine

Introductions should start with Max being able to hear and smell a new dog but not see him. This can be done a friend's house or perhaps a family member's home. Again, some place neutral to both dogs. Once he is acclimated, he should be able to see the new dog but have no physical contact. This can be done using the fence at a dog park. Eventually, you will be able to physically introduce Max to the dog. Use a leash on both dogs for safety and muzzles if necessary. Go slowly, don't force him but correct any negative or aggressive behaviors immediately. Praise and reward him as he progresses.

The most important thing is that, if you get another dog, you introduce the two on neutral territory. Just waltzing a strange dog into Cody's house is begging for trouble. You could try a trial meeting to see how Cody is with the other dog. I would recommend a bitch, as two dogs of opposite genders are the least likely to fight. Remember that Cody was there first, and be sure he gets the lion's share of attention. Sometimes, the novelty of a new dog, and the requisites of trainng, mean that the old dog gets left out a bit. The new dog will not know you, and will therefore have no expectations as far as interacting with you. But Cody will want what he's always gotten. I would consider having Loki meet the other dogs on neutral ground several times prior to moving in (or as often as possible) so that they can see eachother without feeling that space is invaded. I think having Loki on a light leash is a good idea as well initially in case things do escalate. It is important to keep the dogs separate when feeding because this is often a moment when confrontation can occur. Also be sure each dog has it's own bed that it can retire to without competition from another dog. It may be helpful if Loki is a bit anxious to gate part of the house if the other dogs tend to be in his face all the time, when you are not home especially, so he doesn't feel threatened.
