What are physical and mental changes for a 7-year-old dachshund?

Around 8 years old is average for most diseases to start showing up. Back problems are the #1 problem we see with these guys and that can happen at any age. Usually happens due to obesity so keep him lean! The other huge issue is their teeth. They have horrible teeth in general and all that tartar buildup can contribute to other health issues like heart and kidney disease. My recommendations: 1) Take him to your vet for yearly check-ups and senior blood testing 2) Keep him lean 3) Keep his teeth in good health That is all you have control over. Have him examined yearly by your veterinarian and keep him current on vaccines and parasite prevention. Feed a balanced diet and monitor his weight. Provide plenty of exercise and play to keep him engaged.

Larger dogs do age more quickly than smaller dogs. In the case if your dogs I would say your seven-year-old is ‘middle-aged’ and would consider him a senior dog at about 9 or 10 years of age. The larger dog, Tasha I would say would be middle-aged at about 6 years old. And would consider her a senior dog at age 7 or 8. However, keep in mind, regular veterinary check up and routine preventative healthcare your dogs will have their best chance to live long and happy lives.

I am afraid it is not possible to properly identify this growth from a photo. This could be a wart, a cutaneous horn (both benign), or a tumor or just a tissue reaction. In order to identify such a growth we need to palpate it, determine whether it is solely in the skin or attached under the skin, movable against certain tissues, has a discharge, compare the visible size with the size in or under the skin, take a fine needle biopsy, etc. and give the dog a general exam. If this growth appeared suddenly or appears to be growing, I suggest you take Oskar to your vet to have it examined. Old dogs often get tumors, most of the time they are benign warts, but sometimes they can be bad cancer.

Riley will not be considered a senior dog until she is nine years old. Some would estimate as early as eight years. Housecalls may be possible in your area. Lady should have a physical exam at least once a year regardless of her age because pets age much faster than humans. Geriatric pets should get an exam every 6 months and bloodwork at least once a year. Small breed dogs are considered geriatric at 9 years old. At that time, she should definitely have an exam and a discussion about different foods, exercise recommendations, bloodwork...etc. Good job on thinking proactively!
