At what age is my 7-year-old Chiweenie considered a senior dog?

Larger dogs do age more quickly than smaller dogs. In the case if your dogs I would say your seven-year-old is ‘middle-aged’ and would consider him a senior dog at about 9 or 10 years of age. The larger dog, Tasha I would say would be middle-aged at about 6 years old. And would consider her a senior dog at age 7 or 8. However, keep in mind, regular veterinary check up and routine preventative healthcare your dogs will have their best chance to live long and happy lives.

Lady should have a physical exam at least once a year regardless of her age because pets age much faster than humans. Geriatric pets should get an exam every 6 months and bloodwork at least once a year. Small breed dogs are considered geriatric at 9 years old. At that time, she should definitely have an exam and a discussion about different foods, exercise recommendations, bloodwork...etc. Good job on thinking proactively! The truth is that any age estimate beyond a year is just a guess, so it's definitely possible that the vet was wrong. However, the vet does have the advantage of seeing many different dogs in different age groups, so their guess does have some good experience to back it. I can see why the vet would guess an age beyond seven years, because Sara does appear to be quite grey. However, this happens at various ages in different dogs, so there's no way to know for sure if she is actually over seven. I know it's sad that they live such short little lives, but if you keep her from getting overweight and have regular vet exams, then she should stay happy and healthy for a good number of years. Chance is a handsome boy! I will give his age my best guess! From the pictures, I would say he's a couple of years old, maybe between two and four years old. I wouldn't class him as a senior dog (over seven), but he looks older than a year. He does have lovely white teeth, but it's hard to age a dog based solely on it's teeth. A senior dog who is around 10 could have better teeth due to regular dental than a younger dog who is allowed to chew bones and has no dental care. His eyes look bright and clear, which leads me to believe he is younger than a senior dog. As for the grey hairs on his muzzle, it could be part of his normal coat, but dogs as young as four to five can start having grey hairs. Anyway, I hope this helps, a vet who sees him in person may have a better estimate than I do :-)
