When is my dog considered a senior and what changes should I expect?

Typically i would say 12 to 14 or older but the cat life span can vary. Sometimes disease presents in middle age (5 to 10ish) and other cats live in to their 20s. So it all depends on the cats health status. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Larger dogs do age more quickly than smaller dogs. In the case if your dogs I would say your seven-year-old is ‘middle-aged’ and would consider him a senior dog at about 9 or 10 years of age. The larger dog, Tasha I would say would be middle-aged at about 6 years old. And would consider her a senior dog at age 7 or 8. However, keep in mind, regular veterinary check up and routine preventative healthcare your dogs will have their best chance to live long and happy lives.

Great question! Generally a senior dog is around seven and eight years of age, but smaller breeds may be considered seniors a little later in life, such as around 10 years of age. Lady should have a physical exam at least once a year regardless of her age because pets age much faster than humans. Geriatric pets should get an exam every 6 months and bloodwork at least once a year. Small breed dogs are considered geriatric at 9 years old. At that time, she should definitely have an exam and a discussion about different foods, exercise recommendations, bloodwork...etc. Good job on thinking proactively! Senior is considered a dog over 7-9 years old, also depending on breed. If you believe that Tori weighs too much, I recommend having him evaluated by a vet to see if there are any changes that can be made to his diet. Most puppies/juvenile dogs do not need supplements if they are eating a quality dog food fed in appropriate amounts for their age and breed. If you feel strongly about having Tori take a vitamin, there are many options available in pet stores, but I would recommend that he take a supplement formulated for puppies or juveniles rather than senior or adult dogs. This would require an examination but keep in mind that even then, it would only be an estimation of the age. She is adorable! Best of luck!

The reason why is still unknown, though some suggest that there are several possibilities, including that larger dogs may succumb to age-related illnesses sooner. Also, larger breeds grow from puppies to adults at an accelerated rate, and this may lead to a higher likelihood of abnormal cell growth and death from cancer. I hope this is helpful!
