Why does Petco sell Hills Prescription Diet after dog food recalls?

The current recall has been confined to a specific range of the hills canned/wet diets and if she has been doing well on the active longevity kibble with no flare ups of pancreatitis I would be very slow to consider changing as this may trigger relapses which may be more difficult to control as she is getting older. A very low fat and restricted diet is recommended in pancreatitis patients, this is difficult to prepare accurately at home over the long term to maintain a correctly balanced diet. My preferred choice in such patients is royal canin gastrointestinal low fat or calibra gastro-pancreas but many light and senior diets are also ok in stable cases

Thats funny! Most dogs don't want to eat the Z/D! I don't think they have a food that tastes exactly like the Z/D at non-prescription price but you could try any of the science diet dog foods - all of which are very palatable and she may like. For just a general food, I like science diet adult for dogs over 1. Once she is over 7 years old, I recommend to switch her to the senior diet. It is perfectly safe for her to eat the z/d long term although that would be expensive for you. I hope this helps!

If you have been feeding the Hills prescription food, you can always talk to your doctor about continuing this food. Yes, there is a difference between the prescription diets and regular food, but the regular Science Diet food is high quality. It will be less expensive to feed Science Diet sensitive stomach formula than to continue on the prescription food. You could always try a small bag of the regular food, and if Spartacus does not do as well, you could switch back to the prescription diet. There are specific cases in whichh they can and cannot be feed. For example, a prescription kidney diet will be restricted in protein levels. This would not be appropriate for a young growing puppy. Prescription urinary diet are generally high in fat and salt. This can be contraindicated in patients with heart disease or a history of pancreatitis.
