Can my older unspayed dog still get pregnant? Does fertility decrease?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 11 months old | 8 lbs

Forest was a rescue we adopted almost 2 yrs ago. She was found wandering on a busy road covered in cactus needles. Took her to the vet to see if she was micro-chipped & she wasn't; posted flyers & no takers so we kept her. Vet guessed her to between 4-6 yrs and not spayed. We have a 6 mo old Yorkie & he is not fixed either (may stud him out for breeding). I have decided to spay & she is scheduled in April. My question is whether or not she is still fertile & does fertility decrease w/age?

How lovely of you to adopt Forest, I'm glad she has a happy ended after such a terrible experience. To answer your question, she will still be fertile. Fertility doesn't decrease with age, but it's never recommend to breed a dog over 5-6 years of age. Because your Yorkie could become sexually mature any day now, I would keep him separated from Forest in case she goes into heat before getting spayed in April. You don't want to mate her, it's not healthy on her older body. I hope this helps!
