My dog's puppies died. Will her unconsumed milk hurt her health?

If she stopped feeding them suddenly then mastitis would be a risk (she may refuse them because it is painful or the excess milk after she stopped could cause the problem after). If she is off form, has any fever or her milk glands are red, hot or painful to firm touch then she will need prescription treatment from a vet. If everything is otherwise good, just monitor for any changes. 48 hours of very light food if she is healthy and not underweight can discourage active milk production but do not starve her

Poor mama dog! Don't worry--her lactation will stop as soon as her hormones realize there is no more nursing going on. She will gradually stop lactating and her mammary glands will dry up in a few days. This is a normal process with weaning and no cause for concern.

I am so sorry to hear this happened. You do not have to do anything to "dry her up". Since the puppies are not nursing she will dry up on her own. Milk is only produced in response to the puppies sucking on the teats. Do not handle the teats or try to strip them - you will make matters worse. Not only will she continue to produce milk but your could introduce bacteria into the teats and cause mastitis. Just leave her alone and she will dry up in a few days. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

The best thing to make Princess feel better is to focus on exercise, playtime and a routine. Her milk will dry up over the next week in general. If you’re not planning on breeding Princess, I recommend to have her spayed. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

It isn't unusual for a dead puppy to be born long after a healthy litter is born. It is likely that the puppy was stuck in the birth canal and took longer to deliver and died while being stuck, or it could have been dead in utero and was later expelled with the last placenta. Usually there is no problem with the mother provided she eats, drinks and takes care of her puppies. If she gets lethargic, or if she has smelly discharge from the vulva (greenish non-smelly discharge is normal) then she should be seen by a vet .

If she had puppy recently and she was feeding them, is normal to produce milk for few days after stopping the activity. Without puppies stimulating milk production by suckling, Gracie will stop the milk production soon. Do not squeeze the milk out otherwise she will continue to produce it and monitor the mammary gland. If the glands become painful/red/inflammed, please seek veterinarian attention. Poor Daisy! Cool compresses and cabbage leaves can help but you should make sure to try to minimize stimulation of her mammary glands as much as possible and minimize contact. A tight fitting jacket or Thundershirt might also help.
