My old dog is suffering from multiple illnesses. Should I put him to sleep?

Yes, uti, kidney disease or diabetes are all possibilities. I would definitely consider euthanasia at this stage given her progressive conditions which are not going to improve and are becoming increasingly restrictive on her independence and quality of life

The decision on when to let Honey go is never easy. From the photos I can see that she is quite thin and appears to have little muscle mass. Since her appetite is normal, it is possible that she has cancer (cancer uses a lot of energy to grow and essentially takes calories and nutrients away from other body systems), but could have other endocrine/metabolic conditions (such as diabetes) or kidney disease. Diabetes and kidney disease could also explain her increase in urination. At this point, I recommend taking Honey to the vet for an exam and blood and urine testing. While none of the conditions I mentioned above are curable, they can be managed with medication that could improve Honey's quality of life. A vet cannot force you to euthanize a pet, but may strongly recommend this as an option if there is a grave prognosis or suffering. I hope this helps and that all goes as well as possible for Honey.

This is an extremely difficult decision to make. I always try to look at a dog's quality of life to determine if they are still able to do most of the things they've always loved. If they are unable to do half of their favorite things, it is likely that their overall quality of life has declined and euthanasia may be warranted. Since your dog is currently eating, drinking, acting and playing normally, it does not sound as though her time has come. However, since one of her masses ruptured, there is a chance that it could become infected. Ideally, the mass would be surgically removed and biopsied. If surgery is not an option, she may need a course of antibiotics to prevent the onset of infection in the open lesion. If the open mass continues to bleed or begins to cause discomfort, you may need to decide if she should have surgery or euthanasia. If you are beginning to question if the time for euthanasia has arrived, consider discussing this with your vet to get their take since they have examined your dog and can provide some insight into her current quality of life. I'm sorry Ben has an anal tumor! Your vet is right that he will be pain, even if he doesn't act like it. Dogs can be very stoic about pain, and he is also showing you he is in pain from his arthritis based on the fact that he moves around slowly and can't get up stairs well. Also consider his quality of life if he starts having trouble passing feces due to the size and location of the tumor. In the meantime, I would discuss giving him pain meds with your vet. The brain tumor may have spread to his other organs causing him to have multiple problems. Unfortunately, it sounds like his quality of life is not very good at this point. You could have your vet run some lab work and possibly take x-rays of his abdomen to see if anything can be done to help him and make him more comfortable but, if not, than you may need to consider euthanasia, especially if he seems to be suffering. So sorry that Peppe is having all these problems.

Hi there! Thanks for letting us take care of you today! Sorry to hear about Ruger. I definitely know where you are coming from as I mostly see cancer patients. What I usually tell my clients is that the time to consider humane euthanasia is when they stop being themselves. For example, when they stop doing 3 out of their 5 favorite things (eating, playing, or whatever these are), it is time to let them go without suffering. Of course this is if not considering treating the cancer. There are always palliative medications you could consider like prednisone and anti-nausea medications (as cancer can cause nausea depending on the type) just from a palliative standpoint to try to make Ruger feel better in the meantime.
