Is it safe to give my new 9-week-old puppy a Nylabone to chew on?

The nylabone is generally safe to play with and is difficult to chew, so the little bits that could get ingested are not toxic or enough to cause problems. If a bigger piece was somehow ingested, then this would be a problem. Veterinary dentists warn that nylabones are too hard and can lead to tooth fractures, so it's not commonly recommended anymore. The recommendation is to not get chews that are hard enough that they would hurt if you were hit in the kneecap with it. Kongs are usually a safe choice. That looks like a rawhide type which is soft enough for puppies when supervised and removed before they become small enough to try and swallow. It is important to avoid over hard toys such as real bones, antlers, nylabone while he still has baby teeth

These tiny pieces should pass through without an issues. It is when larger pieces break off and are ingested that there is cause for concern. Always monitor your dog when he is chewing. Replace the NylaBone if it breaks into several parts or if he can fit the entire bone into his mouth.

Keep in mind that it is perfectly appropriate for a 9 week old puppy to be exploring his world by chewing everything in sight, and for most dogs it is a phase that will resolve as long as you don't unintentionally encourage the behavior. You should have plenty of appropriate chew toys (rawhides are okay as long as he isn't biting off large pieces) to give him whenever he is chewing on you or something he shouldn't. If he nips you, make a loud high pitched noise, give him an appropriate chew and remove your attention. If he keeps trying to bite at you he may need to go somewhere quiet. It will seem like you're not making any progress for awhile but eventually he'll catch on.

As long as they chewed it up sufficiently, it should pass. Larger pieces may cause stomach upset or pose a risk of obstruction. You can monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, straining to defecate or loss of appetite. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

I personally never recommend giving dogs bones. They too often break teeth, and can and do lead to obstructions in the GI tract. Now there are rubber bones that Stormy can chew on, and you can give her one designed specifically for puppies. They are a bit softer and will help her when she starts teething in a couple of months. The Kong brand has a great range of puppy rubber bones, and I would get her one of those from a pet store. Just make sure to watch her when she chews on it to make sure she doesn't bite off and swallow any parts. Best of luck!

I don't think is a problem. If it is more of a toy than a treat and is meant to last for a long time, by all means, give it to the puppy. If it is more of a treat, just be careful not to feed too many and upset the nutritional balance of his primary diet.
