My nursing dog vomited. Are her 9-day-old puppies getting enough milk?

At almost six weeks old, the puppies should start weaning and you can leave them out a puppy mush. I would soak a high quality puppy formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with puppy formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry puppy food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until they are eating the dry puppy food only. As for the mother, I would be concerned that she could be vomiting due to a postpartum complication such as eclampsia or mastitis. It would be best for her to see a vet immediately to be safe.

It is possible there is an issue that is causing your puppies to vomit up what they are eating. You may see other issues such as lethargy or failure to grow in addition. It is best to have them examined by your local vet to check for any illness or deformities that may be causing the puppies to become ill.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Loki! I would have Loki seen on emergency or right at 8 am. I would want to be sure that there is no uterine or mammary gland infection, no retained puppies and that her calcium is normal. Low calcium is serious. If you have the ability to bottle feed the puppies until you can get Loki to the Vet then do that , if you don't then let them nurse. I hope this helps and I wish Loki a speedy recovery!

One episode of vomiting and a little stuffiness (as an isolated incident) is usually not a cause for concern. However, since Josie is current nursing a litter of pups, I would tend to be more cautious about how to go about her care. The safest thing to do would be to have her checked by a vet for the presence of any sort of illness. You definitely want to make sure that the puppies are getting all of the appropriate care and nutrition required to grow into young and healthy dogs. At home, you can certainly check her temperature rectally (99.5 - 102.5), check her gums or moisture and pinkness, and check her skin for elasticity (when you tug on it, it should return back to its original position relatively quickly) as an indicator of hydration. Monitor the puppy and if it continues then the puppy should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. She could have an infection, parasite, etc. causing her to vomit and your vet can prescribe medications to help treat.

The only way to make sure they are getting enough milk is to weigh the puppies every day and make sure the puppies are gaining weight. Neonatal puppies should have a weight gain of 5-10% of birth weight daily --they may lose a little the first 24 hours, but after that we need to see this weight gain. If they are not gaining at that level, they need to be evaluated, and if otherwise normal, supplemented with formula and tube feeding to achieve this weight gain. Sounds like everything is going great with Juliet and the puppies. Remember to feed Juliet puppy food during this time because her nutritional requirements are very high during lactation. Good luck
