My nursing dog is eating less. Should I give her appetite supplements?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 27 lbs

My dog is eating very less and she is nursing her puppies 3 weeks old. She was eating really good for 2 weeks 4 times a day. Should I give her liver tonic to increase her appetite.

I would start to wean the puppies. Offer canned puppy food a few times per day but still allow them to nurse. Gradually over the next 2-3 weeks get them fully weaned. As for Tofy, I would consider feeding her 2-3 times per day. She may not need the extra calories anymore, as long as she isn't losing weight. I would be sure that she has been dewormed and I would also have the puppies dewormed starting now and every 2 weeks or follow your Vet's schedule.

I would not recommend any supplements with out discussing it with your Vet while she is nursing. If Tofy isn't doing well and is losing weight then she should be examined by your vet.

It is normal for the mom to lose some weight during lactation, but if you are seeing ribs, then she is not eating enough calories. What's the deworming schedule for a nursing mother dog losing weight?

Great question! Tofy should be dewormed now, then again in two weeks, and a third treatment two weeks after that. This will ensure all the worms are killed. After that, she should be dewormed every three months. When the puppies reach six months of age, they should also be dewormed every three months. I would also feed her a puppy formulated food while she is nursing her puppies. That will give her extra calories, calcium, and protein to support nursing them. Once the puppies are weaned, she can go back onto an adult dog food. Good luck, I hope this helps!

My nursing dog lost weight after puppies, eating a lot. How to help?

Hello, congratulations on your new puppies. Pregnant bitches and those who have just birthed puppies will have a substantially higher calorie demand. Most of the time, we even recommend switching mothers to puppy food (richer in calories) to keep up with there caloric demand. Alternatively, at four weeks you may wean the puppies off from nursing an onto wet/canned puppy food so that mom stops producing milk and her caloric demand returns to normal. You may feed her up to 4-6 times per day while she continues to nurse. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Can a nursing dog eat adult dog food when puppy food isn't an option?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It isn't ideal to feed adult food but if it is impossible to get it then you can only do what you can do. I would discuss with your Vet supplementing with Calcium as she is a small breed dog and low calcium is risky right after birth from nursing. How to get a nursing dog to eat when she's distracted outside?

Is there any way you can set up a pen for her outside by her doghouse? If she is still active, and the puppies are gaining weight, and she's alert, caring for the puppies, and isn't vomiting, having diarrhea, etc, she probably is getting enough to eat; however, of course there is concern that she does need to be getting enough nutrition for herself and the puppies. Check her weight and the weights of the puppies every 2-3 days and make sure everyone is holding their own. You can also add canned food or boiled chicken to her food to encourage her to eat. My dog stopped nursing her puppies. What should I do to help them?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! How old are her puppies? If they are under 4 weeks then you will need to bottle feed the puppies. If they 3-4 weeks start offering canned puppy food along with bottle feeding and have them fully weaned by 5-6 weeks. Without forcing Cali to nurse them there aren't any other options. I would suggest not breeding her again and have her spayed since she is unwilling to continue to raise the puppies and this likely will be a repetitive behavior.
