My newborn puppy has weak legs. How can I help him walk?

Hello. This pup has a deformity that involves the joints of the rear legs. You should have your veterinarian assess the puppy immediately and see if there is a way to tape or wrap them to help. This will probably not correct in its own without some type of support wrap and physical therapy and even then it may not get better. Please have your vet examine the puppy ASAP. I suspect this is a congenital abnormality. I recommend to get Ares examined by the veterinarian. With puppies, sometimes there are treatments available since they are still developing but sometimes there are not any options. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

That is not normal for pups recovering from parvovirus. I recommend an evaluation with a rehab veterinarian if there is one in your area. They can give you exercises to strengthen the rear legs and determine if it’s from a back or leg problem or just weakness from the diesease. The sooner you get him up and standing and walking the better since the muscles and ligaments need weight bearing and movements to get stronger. If you are able to, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do without know for sure what this could be. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Congratulations on your new puppy Griff! At such a young age, it’s hard to say how things will develop and I agree that monitoring him is appropriate right now. He will see the veterinarian frequently since he is getting his vaccine series. Make sure they check his legs and hips each visit and watch him walking. You can get radiographs done but at such a young age, it may be hard to identify any pathology. Radiographs done when he is 9-12 months old will be more likely to be diagnostic. Sometimes a CT scan can catch bone abnormalities earlier. It’s very important that you feed him a puppy food and that he does not become overweight while he is developing. I would suggest taking Aurora's pup for a vet exam. It could be a congesnital disorder or the pup may have been injuries inadvertently if Aurora sat on her or moved her. The earlier treatment instituted in some of these cases the better the chance the pup will have normal function.
