What to do for a newborn puppy with a leg injury from its mom?

This sounds like a bad situation. Yes euthanasia may be the most human option, however, if that is not an option for you than it is VERY important to involve a veterinarian so that the puppy can be protected with antibiotics and something to help with pain. Your veterinarian may advise a surgery to remove any bony remnants if the traumatic amputation left behind parts that could lead to pain and arthritis. Please, please take her in for some antibiotics at the very least. She could develop a life threatening infection.

This is a medical emergency, and this puppy needs to see a vet now. This will be extremely painful for him, and he needs pain medications right away. Do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. He also needs x-rays to determine how bad the fracture is, and if surgery is an option to repair it. If the fracture is really bad, amputation may be needed, but only a vet can decide that. Please take him into a vet immediately.

It's difficult to tell what's going on from the picture. I'm concerned there is a serious infection or a cancerous growth there and would recommend taking the pup to a veterinarian to be evaluated. If you are unable to do that, then the best you can do is to clean the area with lukewarm water and a mild soap, and keep it nice and dry. If the dog is chewing at it at all, an e collar can be used to prevent him from getting back there. However, I do not think this is going to resolve without veterinary intervention.

Unfortunately there are no OTC medications you can give this puppy, especially not pain relievers. Many are toxic to puppies and can be fatal if given. Keeping her separated for now is a good idea, and you will have to feed her with a puppy formula while she is separated. A brand I recommend is called KMR, and you can get it at a grocery store. Bottle feed her tonight, keep her warm, and definitely take her into the vet in the morning.

Congratulations on your new puppies. As you were describing how one of them was walking, I began to think that either there has been trauma to that specific leg either buy mom accidentally rolling over on the puppy, etc. or there may even be a genetic growth disorder that is affecting the specific puppy. Actally there is still that a lot that can be done for pets this young in terms of veterinary care. Perhaps a small splint can be applied or maybe there is a nutritional deficiency that is causing this leg abnormality that can be corrected by proper supplementation. Nevertheless, I urge you to take the affected puppy to the veterinarian as soon as possible to have a complete orthopedic examination performed. I would also take another one of the puppies as well as the mother just in case they need to do some testing on them also to see if there are any linking causes. Good luck. I am so very soory your pet has such a severe injury and no available vet anywhere for the moment. There isn't a whole lot you can do to help with the pain besides soaking this area in a Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water bath to help relieve some of the inflammation and also cut down on any bacteria that may develop at the site of the injury. You should also clean this daily with sterile saline. Applying a cold compress (for 5 mins max twice daily) on the area first can also help with pain anf inflammation. We can't recommend any over the counter pain medicine b/c they can be quite toxic in pets and therefore we can't risk it. I would try to do this and wrap the leg as best you can with materials (Tefla pad, continuous gauze, cast padding) from your local pharmacy. You can certainly also look up "how to bandage your pets leg" on youtube to learn how to do this safely and without cutting off any circulation in the process. Then work diligently to try and find any vet in the area that can help your poor puppy moving forward, because it sounds like he will certainly need medical attention moving forward if we are going to help him save this leg.
