My newborn puppy has a blister-like bump on its head. Should I pop it?

Hello. This looks like a small, benign button tumor. Usually, they do not grow significantly & sometimes they regress spontaneously. Do not pop this yourself because of the risk of infection. Any lump & bump should be thoroughly examined by your veterinarian because while this looks benign, it may not be. If your vet tells you he is concerned & it should be removed, this is an ideal time to do so while it is very small. Otherwise, leave it be until your vet has a chance to look at it. This could be a sign of puppy pyoderma, trauma (is she licking the area a lot?), insect bites, or signs of a viral infection/fever, rodenticide ingestion, a congenital or acquired disorder affecting the platelet's ability to adhere to damaged blood vessels. If these blood "blisters" keep enlarging or do not go away within a few days, you will need to consult your veterinarian. The vet will perform a thorough physical examination. Lab tests will be necessary such as a complete blood count, biochemistry profile, and urinalysis and possibly a coagulation panel. There is no specific treatment for those blood filled skin lesions, however it is important to find the underlying cause, which then can be addressed. So, I suggest you monitor the skin and if the lesions enlarge, or if they do not go away within a few days or spread, you take your puppy to your veterinarian. If your puppy gets pale gums it is an emergency and your pup needs to be seen at an ER right away.

It could be that Tucker has a cyst on top of his head. I would give the vet a call to make an appointment to have this checked out. If he does have a cyst, the vet can drain it in a sterile manner, and may want to do surgery to remove the cyst sac to prevent it from reoccurring. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

This actually looks like some normal dark pigment on the tip of the tail. It does not look concerning at this time and should start to grow hair and look more normal in the next two weeks. Just keep an eye on it for now. If you notice any areas of redness, or flakey skin, then it's best to take them to the vet for an evaluation. That looks like a wound or blister that may be draining and/or infected since it looks weepy. It would be best to have it checked out by your vet in person, especially if it is oozing debris, so it can be cleaned and treated with antibiotics as needed. Your vet can also rule out other issues such as blisters, cysts, growths, etc. Until you can get to your vet, keeping the area clean and dry and placing an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Sapphire may help.

I would guess from your description that these might either be from a bacterial skin infection like puppy pyoderma, or folliculitis. Both of these problems will sometimes resolve without treatment if they are mild enough. I would not recommend picking at any skin lesion. If they are not resolving in the next week or so, or if Hummel seems itchy or begins losing hair I’d recommend seeing your veterinarian.

It is possible that they are small wounds/ scabs from the puppies playing rough with each other. I commonly see play wounds on puppies.
