What's on my newborn German Shepherd runt's arm? Mom won't nurse him.

It appears to be a callus or a scab. I would keep an eye on this area for the next 7 days and if it changes (gets bigger, becomes swollen, is painful, discharge is evident) then I would recommend having a veterinarian examine this so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. It is impossible to give you a definite answer to this question. Certainly the poor start in life could have had a detrimental effect to the pups development especially its immune system. However, a lot of puppies that have had a bad start dont look back once they get into a good routine. My advice would be to keep the pup well up to date on vaccines, worming, external parasite control and feed a good quality puppy food such as royal canin/hills. You could have the puppies bloods checked when it is 6 months just to make sure its organs are doing well.

You may find these online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!

Hello. It is very difficult to see, but it LOOKS like the mother dog may have gotten a little rough with this puppy & caused a skin injury. I would pick up some antibacterial wash like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ) & gently clean the area twice daily. Rinse & dry the area thoroughly. I would not put anything else on the puppy as Mom will just lick it off. As long as the pup seems to be eating well, then I would see how this goes for a few days.
