Help! New puppy, jealous dog, and vacation coming up. What to do?

Your house is a lot different, and your own dog may be feeling like there is a bit of an "intruder" situation going on. it may take some time for your dogs to all get along, especially if the change was recent. Until they get along better, the dogs should only be together when able to be supervised by you. You may also want to pick up items of contention such as beds, toys, treats, etc that may be fought over if your dogs feel threatened. If a fight breaks out, immediately separate the dogs for a "time out"/cooldown, and then reintroduce when all dogs are calm and relaxed. When you are not at home, the dogs should be separated or crated in separate crates to avoid a potential fight. If the issue persists, speaking with a trainer or behaviorist may also help as they can often observe what is going on in the home, and can make suggestions based on your specific needs.

Here's a strategy that can help. Next time you are trying to give Milo the cat some love on the sofa, ask your pup to sit, stay, or lay down. Give treat when he does and then give Milo some love. Immediatley come back to your pup and give him a treat and love on him. Rinse and Repeat many times over the course of a few days. It is never a good idea to introduce a new dog into a household where there are existing problems with the dog in residence. You neen to get Leo's behavior under control before even thinking about getting a puppy. If Leo is food-motivated, have your parents or boyfriend keep a handful of treats ready when you are about to demonstrate any kind of affection towards them. As you do, have the other person give Leo a treat. Praise him if he has been good. Soon, he will come to associate these acts of affection with something tasty. You can try and give Harley a calming chew such as NaturVet Quiet Moments with Melatonin and see if this helps calm him while he is in his crate. I would suggest giving him indestructible toys such as the Kong toys to keep him busy while he is in the crate. When you are at home with him, you need to make the crate a positive place for him to be. This means putting his food and water in there so when it is dinner time or breakfast time, he eats in the crate. Lots of treats to reward him when he goes in would help create a positive environment as well. I hope this helps! I would recommend giving Maddy a very slow introduction to the new dog. You should be sure to spend time alone with Maddy at least once a day, and she should have a little time each day to have the house to herself as well. I would recommend keeping them mostly separate for a few days to weeks: they can sniff each other through a closed door at first then have short periods of time together supervised. If someone gets upset, they should be separated again. You may be surprised - Maddy might get along great right off the bat with the new dog but don't be discouraged if it takes awhile. You also might want to consider purchasing a pheromone spray like Feliway to help decrease her stress.

Hi! Congratulations! How cute. Sorry you have some behavioral issues going on. These can happen, especially if same sex. I would recommend getting a trainer involved and getting on top of that asap. It will only get worse. Until then, keep.them both on leashes so that you can redirect them and try to teach them exactly what you are saying no to. Congrats on your new puppies! First thing you need to do is stop taking them to the dog park. They will not be fully vaccinated at six weeks of age, and it is not safe at all to take Oscar and Harper places where many dogs can frequently. They can contract parvo or distemper, both of which are horrible and fatal diseases. They should not be taken outside your backyard until they are fully vaccinated. They need their first round of shots now, and then will need two additional series of vaccines four weeks apart. Ten days after they receive their final round of vaccines, then it will be safe for them to go to the dog park. As for their behavior when you leave, it sounds like they may be suffering from separation anxiety. I would recommend crating them in separate crates when you are gone. The crate will provide them a small space where they can feel safe in it when you are gone. You will have to slowly train them to get used to a crate. Start putting them in it when you are home and sitting nearby so they doesn't think you are abandoning them, and slowly increase the time they are in it. They can have toys in their crates, and puzzle toys with treats in it that they have to figure out how to get the treats out. You can put a tablespoon of peanut butter in a Kong toy and freeze it in the freezer overnight, then give it to them in their crates. That will keep them occupied for a while. Finally, you can get a pheromone diffuser called DAP that helps dogs with anxiety.
