You can usually double their weight and that is the average of full grown. At 4 months old, it is hard to say since a cocker spaniel is typically larger than a poodle, and the size will depend on if it is miniature poodle, toy poodle or standard poodle in the blood lines. A healthy puppy should have ribs you can feel but never see and a waist line viewed from above. With all the hair it will be easily viewed when wet.

I personally recommend neutering around 5-6 months of age depending on the breed of the dog, there is no real weight requirement and obviously it varies patient to patient. I would expect for any patient to be in good body condition (for example a score of 4 or 5 out of 9) and to be in good general health. Your veterinarian will be able to perform a preneuter check and discuss Pocholos individual case and the procedure prior to booking any surgery.

I recommend consulting with your veterinarian to have them determine Bobo's Body Condition Score (BCS) and see if he is at an adequate weight for his body size. If you can get him down to 18 pounds, that would be a good start. Most male Chugs weigh about 15 to 18 pounds. Monitor his weight as well as his BCS (body condition score). Your veterinarian can show you how to do this. You want Duke to lose weight but not too much. He should have a nice layer of fat over his ribs. He should also have a wait when viewed from above and a gentle abdominal tuck when viewed from the side. He shouldn't look like a square or a rectangle

There is no ideal weight as doodles vary so much in size. A perfect weight dog should have a waist when looking down on him and a tucked tummy from the side view. You should be able to easily feel his ribs but not see them when looking from the side. He should have good muscle covering over his spine. The amount of food to maintain ideal body weight varies on size and activity but monitoring how he looks and feels will tell you if his weight is ideal.
