How much food should I feed my Mountain Cur dog daily for health?

There is a little variation among individuals but that is a good place to start. I can’t give you an exact calorie requirement without seeing Montana and deciding if she is thin, ideal or a little chunky for her frame. Ballpark is likely around 600 kcals per day. For most foods that’s 2-3cups. Ideally, divide that into three small meals per day. If you’d like a more exact recommendation, talk to your vet and she can calculate that for you. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! This isn't an easy question to answer, it depends on if Bruno is a healthy weight. Is he overweight or too thin? I always recommend using the dog food bag as a guideline. If the dog is too heavy then cut back and if too thin then increase. I think it is perfectly fine to feed him twice a day. I would feed him about 1.5 to 2 cups twice a day depending on how active he is. If you want to give him some of the human food supplements, that is fine but I would not make it his main diet as that doesn't have all the vitamins and minerals that he needs. i hope this helps.

The caloric content of each diet is different and even different in each of the different varieties of that diet you feed him. You can always look at the caloric content of the one you are specifically feeding him to make sure you are feeding the right amount. That information can be found in the bag or online. I prefer to split the total amount of food into 2 feedings per day. Good luck!

That depends on the food that you are feeding! Different types of dog food will contain a different number of calories per cup of food. I recommend starting with the feeding recommendations found on the bag of food you are using. There will usually be a grid that has the body weight and daily food amount. I recommend dividing the daily food amount into 2 feedings, AM and PM. Some dogs have a higher or lower metabolism than the average dog, so after feeding for a month, I re-evaluate and see if we need to increase or decrease that feeding amount to get them to their ideal body weight.

You should be able to find calories per cup or per can on the website from the pet food manufacturer. You are correct to increase the calories on days he runs. Overall, I base how much to feed on how the dog looks. You want to easily feel the ribs, if not see the last one or two. He also needs a defined waste from both the top and side views. The feeding recommendations are averages for all dogs. They can vary widely based on metabolism and energy level. Based on the picture you posted of Oliver, his weight looks perfect. If you are feeding him 1 cup twice daily, but his weight stays at 16-17 pounds and your vet says he is a good weight, then I wouldn't change anything. But I find that most dogs need less than the recommendation on the bag as they get older and their metabolism and activity decreases, so be sure to monitor his weight carefully.
