Is it normal for a mom dog to leave her new puppies for a break?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 2 months old

Should the mom of my new puppies be in the bed with them all the time or is it normal for her to have a break every now and again

It is normal for the female dog to have a break every now and then, as she will have to go to the bathroom, get some food, or simply want to move around. As long as she returns to the puppies and isn't gone a long time, there is nothing to worry about.

Yes, the mothers tend to tire of their young rather quickly and it's natural for them to spend some time away from the nest during the day. If she is feeding and cleaning them good, then I would not be worried about it, or consider it unusual.
