Can I mix Hill's Science Diet dry and wet food for sensitive stomachs?

If Snowball is having normal bowel movements and is not vomiting on the Hill's diet then it is likely fine for her. However, Hill's Sensitive Stomach and Skin is not labeled for use in puppies. I'd suspect Snowball is no longer growing at a puppy rate by 10 months old, but it would still be wise to check in with your veterinarian regarding if she can be placed in this adult food at this time. As you've experienced, diet changes can certainly cause some changes in stool volume, and for some dogs, can cause a bit of vomiting and diarrhea. When it comes to the countless brands of dog food on the market today, it's overwhelming to pick one for your pup. I recommend brands that have been formulated by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, are manufactured in their own facility (less cross-contamination that facilities that manufacture numerous formulations), conduct AAFCO feeding trials, and meet WSAVA guidelines. When it comes down to it, the brands that meet those criteria include Hill's Science Diet, Purina, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, and Iams. As a result, I would recommend switching Lilly over to the Science Diet puppy food. Just remember that anytime you switch foods, be sure to do so by gradually mixing the old and new foods together over a 5-7 day period. I hope that everything goes well!

If you have been feeding the Hills prescription food, you can always talk to your doctor about continuing this food. Yes, there is a difference between the prescription diets and regular food, but the regular Science Diet food is high quality. It will be less expensive to feed Science Diet sensitive stomach formula than to continue on the prescription food. You could always try a small bag of the regular food, and if Spartacus does not do as well, you could switch back to the prescription diet. Regarding the inconsistent stools, it may be caused by variations in his diet (treats, C/D food and his regular food). You should try and get him a probiotic and add it to each meal for 5-7 days. That should help to regulate his bowel movements.

If Sadie has gastrointestinal signs, like vomiting, nausea, loose stools, gurgling abdomen, abdominal distension or abdominal pain, you should change her diet to a different one. There are good quality diets for dogs with sensitive stomach and skin problems on the market (for example Purina, Eukanuba, Royal Canin). It is better the change the diet slowly, as abrupt change is likely to produce more serious gastrointestinal problems. Please, mix Sadie's current food with a new diet for a few days slowly increasing the amount of new food and decreasing her old diet. After 4-5 days of doing this it should be safe to stop her Hill's food completely.

Your vet can also work with you on a food trial if it is suspected that a certain ingredient is the cause for the problem. For general sensitive stomach/skin, Science Diet has a formulation that addresses both. You want to make sure to gradually change the diet over a period of 7-9 days to avoid additional stomach upset, gradually adding in more of the new food. It can also take up to two months for a food trial to see results.
