My dog has sensitive stomach & skin. What food should I feed?

I recommend to ask your veterinarian this question. A true food allergy generally requires a special diet (this is generally a prescription food and I always recommend one with a hydrolyzed protein). Dietary intolerance may just need a diet that is formulated for sensitive stomachs. I recommend the Royal Canin or Purina ProPlan. Your vet will be able to guide you as to which type of food to try. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The Science diet sensitive skin and stomach is quite good. I really like all the Nylabone products. I find that dogs really like them and they are fairly inexpensive. They also seem to help with cleaning the teeth a bit. Have a good day!

As you've experienced, diet changes can certainly cause some changes in stool volume, and for some dogs, can cause a bit of vomiting and diarrhea. When it comes to the countless brands of dog food on the market today, it's overwhelming to pick one for your pup. I recommend brands that have been formulated by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, are manufactured in their own facility (less cross-contamination that facilities that manufacture numerous formulations), conduct AAFCO feeding trials, and meet WSAVA guidelines. When it comes down to it, the brands that meet those criteria include Hill's Science Diet, Purina, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, and Iams. As a result, I would recommend switching Lilly over to the Science Diet puppy food. Just remember that anytime you switch foods, be sure to do so by gradually mixing the old and new foods together over a 5-7 day period. I hope that everything goes well!

A skin sensitive diet such as royal canin skin support or a hydrolyzed diet such as royal canin hypoallergenic would be worthwhile, a 6-8 week trial would be recommended to assess the response from any new diet

Hi there and thanks for posting. Although there isn't a food that is formulated for all three medical issues you listed, but there are separate foods for sensitive stomach/skin and cardiac disease. Prescription diets by Royal Canin or Hills such as Hill's Z/D Diet or D/D or Royal Canin's Ultamino Diet or their Cardiac Formula would be ones I would recommend. You can try the duck or fish to see if Sadie likes that better, but do the food switch slowly over the course of two weeks to prevent further GI upset. Royal Canin has a sensitivity controlled food (Royal Canin Sensitivity Control) that may work for her as well. I hope this helps!
