Why does my Min Pin yelp in pain when excited or touched near neck?

He is painful not afraid. This posture looks like neck pain from a bulging intervertebral disc. This is very painful and is common in small dogs. Please take him to your veterinarian for an exam. They will probably prescribe pain medication, muscle relaxers and an anti inflammatory medication. They may recommend an X-ray also. This is a serious medical problem as the pain can be severe and some dogs become paralyzed. You should not use a collar on Moose, use a harness if needed. Massage and heat on the neck can reduce the muscle spasms and make Moose more comfortable. Also I treat these dogs with laser and acupuncture for the neurological problem, muscle spasm and pain. I would be very concerned about this level of pain and would recommend an exam by a veterinarian. It could be neurological, a disc problem, a strain in the bones or muscles of the neck or possibly an infection somewhere in that area. The vet may recommend x-rays to get a diagnosis. Please do not give any human pain medication as these can cause serious side effects in animals. It is best to get pain medication that has been prescribed by your veterinarian that is safe for dogs. It's possible that he has some back or neck pain. This is one of the more common causes of sudden yelps of pain that don't seem related to anything specific. It does sound like Oreo is likely having some pain, so I would recommend that you take him in to see your veterinarian today if at all possible. They will do a physical exam and determine whether he's painful and try to localize the cause better. They can send him with some medications to make him more comfortable and may recommend other treatments as well (acupuncture, therapeutic laser, etc). Until you can get him in to see your vet, avoid giving him any over the counter human pain medication, as there is not a safe option to use and giving something like aspirin at home will limit the choices your vet has to treat his pain when you take him in. Also, until you can get him in for an exam, keep him exercise restricted; don't take him on walks, don't encourage "tug or war," chasing a ball, or other play. I hope that helps you! I recommend to have Banjo examined by the veterinarian. This behavior sounds like something is hurting him though high anxiety could also look like this. The problem is that Banjo cannot talk and tell you what he is feeling so you need to have him examined to make sure it's not pain. Pain could be anywhere in his body but common conditions include a disc problem in the neck/spine, a pinched nerve or pancreatitis. After the physical exam, the doctor will have a better idea of what to do next. I hope this helps.

I'm sorry to hear you puppy is having trouble. I would suspect he has shoulder, elbow, or even neck pain from your description of him yelping after picking up near his shoulders. Puppies this young can have some congenital deformity that result in instability and pain, panosteitis (bone inflammation), growth plate problems, or could have potentially had a soft tissue injury or bone displacement (luxation) in that area. I would recommend you take him to your vet for an evaluation, possible x-rays, and to get anti-inflammatory pain medication for him.
