My Maltipoo is in her 4th heat. Can I breed her, and with what dog?

I would call around local clinics to see if you can find a vet familiar with this topic. I see that Bella is three years old, and if you do plan on breeding her, I would not hold off for long. It's never recommended to breed dogs past five years of age. Best of luck.

Hello Christian! Mila Mumu is adorable! It is never recommend to breed a female to a larger male due to the increased size of puppies and the subsequent increased risk of dystocia (difficulty giving birth) leading to a c section. I would choose a male who is her weight or small than her to avoid any danger, so pick a breed of male that smaller than she is when she is fully grown. Please know that it is never recommend to breed a dog on her first heat. That's because she will not be fully mature either physically and emotionally, and that leads to an increased risk of dystocia as well as possible poor mothering. You should wait to breed her until at least her second or third heat (around 18 months of age). I hope this helps!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Dog's heats will last a variable amount of time from animal to animal. Some will last a few days, and some can last up to 3 weeks. Most will be on average around 7 days long. A fair amount of blood coloured fluid will be produced, however dogs are pretty good at cleaning themselves up. About 1 month after she has finished bleeding, I would talk to your vet about getting her desexed to prevent pyometra (pus filled uterus), decrease her risks of mastitis, and many different types of cancers, and prevent unwanted pregnancies. I would be concerned that this weight difference might result in puppies that are too large for Bella and that she could end up needing a c-section. She could also end up having fewer, larger puppies. I think you’re better off searching for a smaller male.

Usually, people want to breed purebred dogs so they can get purebred puppies. It is not required to mate your dog, and if you don't wish to deal with pregnancy or having puppies, spaying Blacky is the better option. That said, she doesn't need to breed with a specific other breed in order to get pregnant -- any male dog that she mates with and that is intact is capable.

I agree that spaying would be best - I typically don’t recommend breeding past the age of 5. It can be harder for an older first time mother to recover and the puppies can have more problems as well. The humping behavior is probably more about dominance than sexual in nature. As she ages she will be at increased risk for a uterine infection so spaying would be best.

The ovulation in dogs usually happens between 8 and 12 day from the beginning of the season (so from the day you noticed that she is bleeding). At that time the discharge becomes light red or pink. If this is day 10 for Daisy, you should take her to the stud dog and see if she will be receptive. If not, repeat the visit in 2 days time.
