My dog is in heat, when should I breed her? She's bleeding pink.

It can vary per dog as it can be day 7-12. The best way to increase your chances with AI is to have your vet check her. They can either do a vaginal cytology to look at the cells. There cells can tell you which stage of estrus she is in for when breeding will be ideal. They can also do blood work to check the progesterone levels to determine peak time

Hi and thanks for posting this morning. It sounds like Penelope is having her first estrus or 'heat' cycle. Dogs come into heat twice a year- once in the spring and once in the fall. Dogs do not have menstrual cycles like humans do- they are quite different. Small drops may be all you will notice-that is normal. Each estrus cycle lasts for about 4 weeks or so, the vaginal discharge she is experiencing may last for two weeks. No need to take her into your veterinarian unless you are still concerned, but it sounds like her estrus cycle has begun which is normal to start for smaller dog around 9 months-1 year of age. If you know it is past time for her to be in heat and other signs are beginning you could wait another week to see if there is any blood or you can have your vet take a look at her. Your vet could do a vaginal cytology to tell you more about what phase of her heat cycle she may be in. If she is not acting herself, not eating or drinking or seems lethargic at any time, I would strongly recommend to have your vet take a look at her. I hope this helps!

If she actually got preegnant, the she will be having puppies 8-9 weeks, so the spay date is not a good one. You need to schedule an appointment now to check the source of bleeding and to possibly give her a hormone shot so the pregnancy can be terminated. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian ASAP so she does not develop an infection.

A dog's heat cycle usually lasts 2-4 weeks. To be safe, I would wait until your dog's vulvar bleeding has stopped for a whole week AND her vulva has returned to its normal size/is no longer swollen. It is always recommended to stay close to Seyla at the dog park in order to intervene quickly in case aggression/attempted mating even if she is no longer in heat occurs.

This doesn't sound like a miscarriage. The blot clot is probably just normal from the heat cycle. I would not be worried about it unless bleeding persists. As a side note, a puppy at 9 months old is probably fertile; rarely are they "blank". They become sexually mature and able to breed a female at about 6-7 months of age. I suspect that she will get pregnant. If you don't want this mating I suggest you speak to your vet about a mis-mating injection.
