Why is my male dog suddenly yelping in pain near his testicles?

Poor pup! It sounds like he was injured when he was outside, and if he's crying in pain, he needs to see a vet right away. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can treat his injury, and give him safe pain medication.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gino! Is Gino eating and drinking? Is he urinating? Is there anyway you can re-post with pictures? Gino could have a testicular torsion, urethral prolapse (especially if you are seeing blood at his penis), a urinary tract infection or simply a skin infection on his belly or testicles or even fleas. I recommend extruding his penis and looking at the tip, checking his skin for fleas and pustules or red bumps. And if he is having trouble urinating and/or isn't eating he needs to see a Vet. Your dog's testicles should have descended when he was a much younger dog. The fact that you're just noticing this now makes me very worried that something is wrong. He could have a torsion, mass, or infection. I would have him seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. He may need to be neutered to resolve this issue.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. An in tact dog may lick his scrotum for many reasons. The most common is actually “contact dermatitis”. That is, a rash from the friction of humping too much. Allergies, pain, and other causes are possible. I’d simply put him in an e-collar (pet store or online) so that he cannot lick them obsessively and cause further irritation. If it’s not better in 48 hours (or worsening at any time), it’s time to see the vet. I absolutely do NOT recommend any over the counter pain medications, though applying some frozen peas (wrapped in a thin kitchen towel or paper towel) might feel great and be very helpful to Fido. I’d do 5 minutes 2-4 times daily. Best wishes to you and Fido!

Swollen testicle can be due to torsion, allergic reaction or infection. i would recommend having it checked by your vet ASAP, if the swelling is too large you will need to take him to the emergencies if your vet is not open today.

I see that your dog is unneutered - one condition that can come on suddenly and be extremely painful is called testicular torsion. Basically, one of the testicles becomes twisted inside the scrotal sac, cutting off the blood supply and causing swelling and intense pain. Based on your description, I would be concerned about this possibility and would recommend getting your dog to a vet as soon as possible, since he is in a lot of distress and there is really nothing that can be done at home to help. Other possibilities would include a scrotal or testicular infection, a tumor, or even a scrotal hernia.

If only Milo could talk! This type of behavior could be related to something like anxiety or to pain/discomfort. I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian who will check for evidence of pain on the physical exam. Many times this type of sudden pain is related to intervertebral disc disease, discospondylitis, upper abdominal pain or a pinched nerve. They may also check a urine sample or the anal glands as well. Since he can't talk, it's best to play it safe. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
