My dog's testicles are injured and he's in pain. Is this an emergency?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pinto. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. It is worrisome that he is yelping out in pain. As far as his testicles, he could be experiencing a torsion. This is very painful. Lower back pain can also cause a dog to yelp. The veterinarian will examine him and try to locate any site of pain. Based on this information, he may need x-rays. Then treatment can be started to help him feel better. In the meantime, keep him quiet and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

If the skin was damaged to the point that the testicles are exposed your dog must be seen by a veterinarian right away to assess whether the testicles can be saved and repaired, or whether he needs to have the damaged testicle(s) removed. This will likely also be infected. Please take your dog to a Pet ER now.

Swollen testicle can be due to torsion, allergic reaction or infection. i would recommend having it checked by your vet ASAP, if the swelling is too large you will need to take him to the emergencies if your vet is not open today.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. An in tact dog may lick his scrotum for many reasons. The most common is actually “contact dermatitis”. That is, a rash from the friction of humping too much. Allergies, pain, and other causes are possible. I’d simply put him in an e-collar (pet store or online) so that he cannot lick them obsessively and cause further irritation. If it’s not better in 48 hours (or worsening at any time), it’s time to see the vet. I absolutely do NOT recommend any over the counter pain medications, though applying some frozen peas (wrapped in a thin kitchen towel or paper towel) might feel great and be very helpful to Fido. I’d do 5 minutes 2-4 times daily. Best wishes to you and Fido!

There is nothing OTC you can give safely. Many human medications are toxic to dogs or easily overdosed. The best you can do now is place an e-collar (cone) on Murphy to prevent licking and keep the area clean. You can use a diluted betadine or chlorhexidine solution to clean the area gently. Murphy is likely in dire need of antibiotics (and pain management) so get him in as soon as possible. The area should be biopsies to rule out any cancer given Murphy's age and the condition. Your dog's testicles should have descended when he was a much younger dog. The fact that you're just noticing this now makes me very worried that something is wrong. He could have a torsion, mass, or infection. I would have him seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. He may need to be neutered to resolve this issue.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gino! Is Gino eating and drinking? Is he urinating? Is there anyway you can re-post with pictures? Gino could have a testicular torsion, urethral prolapse (especially if you are seeing blood at his penis), a urinary tract infection or simply a skin infection on his belly or testicles or even fleas. I recommend extruding his penis and looking at the tip, checking his skin for fleas and pustules or red bumps. And if he is having trouble urinating and/or isn't eating he needs to see a Vet.
