Found a lost dog with neck rash. Is it contagious to my puppy?

She may have mites, fleas, ringworm or another skin problem causing the scabs on her head. I would keep her in a completely separate area from your current dog as many causes of skin disease can be contagious. You will need to know if she has anything that will affect your other dog. It's impossible to say for sure by just looking at the photo. It appears to be a bacterial infection which would not be contagious to your children. However, there is a possibility that it is ringworm- which is a fungal infection and contagious to everyone. Your vet can look at it and distinguish which it is and what medication needs to be used.

A picture of the skin here would help a ton. However I can imagine if you were seeing cuts on Sampsons skin, then this can be caused by just about any kind of trauma ranging from a simple bite or knock caused by rough play, to self-inflicted bites, to actual lacerations from something sharp that the pet came in contact with. However if your other puppy is showing similar symptoms then it very well could be something infectious, such as ringworm or scabies mites. Also check your pets for fleas, as this is a common cause of self inflicted scratches and scans. A good flea preventative is best to do now. If you are seeing lesions on both pets then it is best to take both of them in to your vet on tomorrow for a skin test. Vaccinations wouldn't have anything to do with something like this. With the description you provided it sounds like Zeus may have a skin infection. A skin infection can be caused by a few different things. Zeus may have allergies. I would recommend bringing him to your veterinarian to have them evaluate Zeus. He most likely will need antibiotics and potentially a shampoo. Poor Zeus! The presence of pus suggests that this skin lesion is infected, and he should see a vet for it. An infected wound requires antibiotics to treat it, which the vet can prescribe. I would have him seen by a vet in the morning for this. Tonight, clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap, and keep him from licking at it. I hope this helps!

It could be any of those and yes, it could be contagious. There is no way to diagnose a skin condition just with photos. If I had to guess I would say mange is most likely but again, impossible for me to say for sure based on the photos. There are two types of mange - one is contagious, the other is not. I would quarantine this dog from all your other pets and assume she is contagious until you can get her to the vet.

This is commonly seen when they get a skin infection (aka hot-spots). The neck is a common place for this to happen, because moisture often gets trapped under their collar and/or loose skin. It appears to be rather involved and there could be a deep infection - these are not easily treated without antibiotics. Considering it has been getting better with your current treatment, I think it's fine to continue treating at home for now. If it's not mostly resolved in two weeks, or gets worse, then I'd recommend a visit to the vet. Here are my recommendations for successfully treating this wound. 1) Clip the hair around the area and expose all of the lesions. 2) Wash the area with cool water and a medicated shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day. Use a cloth and gently wipe away the scabs. Do not scrub, because it will irritate the skin more. It's OK if all of the scabs do not come off in each washing. 3) Make sure the area is completely dry after washing. 4) Leave the collar off. I hope that helps and Zeus gets better soon.
