My new shelter dog cries in her crate on the first night. Can I leave her?

I would try putting Co co in a crate at night. Keep in mind she's quite young, and it will take time for her to adjust to being in a new home away from her mother and siblings. It's truly like having a newborn baby in the home! But the good news is that puppies will get better at sleeping at night faster than babies. If you are comfortable with it, you can have her sleep with you at night in your bed. That might make her feel more comfortable. I hope you get some sleep!

The first thing to do is have Lola checked by the veterinarian for pain. It's possible she still has pain, it waking her up, then she's distressed. If a medical cause is ruled out, start feeding Lola in her crate and leave treats in there for her to "find". This will create a positive association and should help re-adjust her to the crate. At her age, she should not be crated for more than 5 hours before being let out to relieve herself. This time can increase as she matures. What's more important is what you DON'T do. BellaRose is acting like a typical child who doesn't want to go to bed. Once you are sure that all of her needs for the night have been taken care of, put her in there and walk away. Do not scold her for crying, or try to soothe or comfort her. Don't go back to her. And do not let her out of the crate! She is testing you. Ignore the crying completely. Once she realizes that her behavior is not having the desired effect, she will stop.
