Labsky mixed breed puppy: Diet, health, and expected size tips?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 17 days old | 11 lbs

In February we plan to bring home this little labsky puppy. We've done our research, but we realized there aren't as many sources on labskies as other breeds simply because they aren't as well-known. I'd just like to know if anyone has experience specifically with this breed and if we can get any tips involving diet, health risks, and what size we can expect her to be (we've seen anywhere from 23 to 60 pounds on various online sources). Any additional information is helpful, too. Thank you!

Hello and thank you for your question. Congratulations on adding Puppy to your family. You are not finding much information because this is not a breed of dog. This is a mixed bred dog. Mixed bred dogs can exhibit any range of behaviors or traits because they are inheriting these from the purebred parents. That is why you are finding so much variation.

Likely this puppy will be at least 50lbs. You will want to feed her a large breed puppy food. She will likely be athletic and active. It's impossible to know her temperament however because huskies and labs tend to be very different. She will likely be somewhere in the middle. Reading about both breeds will better prepare you for owning a mix of the two. While mixed breed dogs tend to avoid the inherited health risks of purebred dogs, they can still have them. She may be prone to the same orthopedic issues that all large breed dogs are susceptible to.

Lastly, beware of back yard breeders who are purposefully breeding mixed bred puppies. The USA has a significant problem with pet over population and thousands of healthy mixed breed dogs are euthanized every year in shelters because there are not enough homes.

While there are certainly problems that we know that are more common in certain breeds, we know less about whether or not mixes that are from those breeds are as likely to have these issues, or not. Are Lab Shepherd mixes good family dogs? What health issues?

However, generally both Shepherd type dogs and Labradors tend to be good dogs for large families. In terms of possible health issues, it is the same thing, it is hard to predict how a mixed breed dog is going to turn out. However, both Shepherd type dogs and Labradors tend to be more prone to issues like hip dysphasia, cancer, laryngeal paralysis, among some other conditions. Good luck and have a great day! My 140lb chocolate lab: What's his life expectancy if he's mixed?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Copper. I would suspect that he is mixed with another breed. That is very large for a Labrador. Most male labs weight between 65-85 pounds at an ideal weight. Some will be bigger and some smaller, but is a pretty consistent average. If he is mixed with a larger or giant breed dog, I would suspect his life span to be closer to those breeds. Most giant breed dogs live 8-10 years. You can do an at home DNA test though if you are interested. I hope this information helps!

It is very difficult to assess in the picture as there are very few landmarks to judge relative size. He appears to be a medium-large breed and would likely be 25-40kg. I would err on the side of caution and feed a large breed puppy diet in order to optimise bone and joint development and allow for steady growth to his full potential

How much should my 4-month-old Lab puppy weigh & how big will she get?

She looks cute and healthy. She also looks to be more of a field type lab which can be smaller than the more English show type labs. I expect her to mature around 50 lbs. or a little larger. Some dogs grow more slowly but will still reach their full normal mature weight, just later than other dogs.
