Can kidney prescription dog food help with my dog's liver issues?

Yes you certainly can get him on the Urinary and Hydrolzyed protein diet; however, this food does not help for any underlying liver condition. There currently is no a combo diet that will help with both urinary and liver problems. You may have to discuss with your vet and determine which disease you will focus on with diet and which can be treated with alternative treatments (i.e. Denamarin liver protectant). Royal Canin makes a prescription diet called Hepatic and Hill's Science Diet makes l/d for Liver care. Both these diets would probably be good options for Lucky but it's important to double check with your veterinarian first. The most helpful treatment Lio could receive right now would be IV fluids for hydration. This will also help diurese him to flush out any potential toxins from his blood. With his age I would be concerned that the cause is a toxicity from him eating something possibly. Denamarin is a good liver supplemw t and getting him to eat a critical care formula food such as Hills A/D is good. If an abdominal ultrasound has not yet been performed, I would consider having that done for more information. I hope this helps and that Lio improves soon. There are several excellent diets for liver disease in the market from Hills, Purina and Royal canin, among others. It should not matter if canned or dry. I would just choose whatever Tanner prefers. The appropriate diet here would be the urinary diet either Urinary S/O or Hill's C/D, and then placing your pet on a liver protectant medication to address the liver issues. The liver protectant medication is called Denamarin, and has to be prescribed by your vet. I would then consider getting your pet an abdominal ultrasound to better define what is specifically going on with the liver, so that we know what mode of therapy would be best to manage things going forward, because these values (ALKP, CHOL) can be changed by not just the liver, but also the gallbladder and adrenal glands. Royal canin is one of the most effective prescription diets for lver conditions and if he is doing well I would be slow to change away from it unless you knew the underlying condition had been resolved. Hills l/d is a similar diet which you could also look at. If dental health is an issue despite regular brushing then a full dental exam and cleaning would be recommended as well as an assessment for any complicating factors such as retained puppy teeth or poor dental alignment

Hi there. I personally love Denamarin for liver support. denosyl is another go to for my clients. There are also prescription diets like LD from hills science diet that seem to help quite a bit with my long term cases of liver failure. Iv fluids may help as well to flush the liver.
