My dog's liver was damaged by pills. Is Denamarin the best option?

Is Denamarin the best product to support dogs liver which has been damaged by tablets ?

Hi there.

I personally love Denamarin for liver support. denosyl is another go to for my clients. There are also prescription diets like LD from hills science diet that seem to help quite a bit with my long term cases of liver failure. Iv fluids may help as well to flush the liver.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

I love Denamarin for liver support but have also used prescription food on top of this for a better effect. My favorite is probably Hills Sience Diet LD but Purina and Royal Canin have comparable diets as well.

If there is significant damage, supplementation alone might not work-depending on the progression of the disease and the nature (has an ultrasound been performed to check for tumors, etc?) it may be a matter of time or it could potentially be operable. I would recommend seeking out a skilled ultrasonographer to determine your options if these suggestions do not help you, or if you are looking for concrete answers quickly.

The results suggest liver inflammation/ mild damage to some the the liver cells. It could be due to infection, mild intoxication, chronic hepatitis etc. As the results are not veyr high, the best way to treat is the provide supplements to speed up liver recovery and re-test the liver enzymes in 4-5 weeks. You should get for Grissom food supplement containing SAMe, (you will find more on SAMe here: https://www.petcoach.co/article/s-adenosylmethionine-same-an-aid-to-managing-liver-disease/ ). Denosyl is a very good supplement containing SAMe but you will probably find cheaper options at your vets, pet shops or online.

Hello. There are many underlying causes for high liver values, some more serious than others. The beauty of our livers is it is the only organ that can heal & regenerate once an insult is removed. I am not sure what your veterinarian hoped to accomplish keeping Lucy over night, but if she is otherwise feeling well, use of the Denamarin & prudent monitoring of the liver values is a good start. It would be helpful to obtain a bile acid assay & abdominal ultrasound to try & get as much information as possible about the liver, but the Denamarin can protect the liver from further oxidative injury. It will not help much if this is cancer, or an active hepatitis or infection, but it has helped to bring the enzyme levels down in some patients. Once you can obtain more detailed information about the liver can you determine how absolutely serious this might be. My dog's epilepsy meds caused liver damage. What are safe options?

Hello there and thank you for using Pet Coach! There are multiple anti-seizure drugs available and some with less side effects than others. If Bailey is on Phenobarbital, Keppra may be a good option for him as this particular drug has fewer side effects and I find that it is less harsh on the liver. Switching to a different drug with less side effects will certainly help. You can also talk to your vet about prescription liver diets in addition to the Denmarin. Hepagen-C is a veterinary product that is over the counter, which we use at our clinic in conjunction with Denamarin or Denosyl. Your vet can also perform a Bile Acids test to determine how much function of the liver has been lost. A scan would certainly be recommended and there are sedative combinations and drugs that we can use that will not trigger seizures, as they are anti-seizure drugs that we use to control seizures. I would still recommend an ultrasound, but talk to your vet about the different drugs that can be used to prevent seizures while sedated. I hope this helps! My dog has bile duct issues. What does Denamarin and antibiotics do?

Denamarin is a good choice for Dahilia. This drug speeds up liver cells healing and protects healthy cells from getting damaged. Any wide-spectrum antibiotic can be used. Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid for 2-3 weeks would be a good choice. If her blood results showed also jaundice, she should be put on ursodeoxycholic acid tablets.

Can kidney prescription dog food help with my dog's liver issues?

Ho, I personally think the liver diet would be the best option. I don’t think the kidney diet will do any harm but it is not the best option. Hill’s L/D has high levels of l-carnicine and l-arginine that are important for the metabolism. You should also see an improvement in the liver condition thanks to Adenosyl supplementation. My senior dog has elevated liver enzymes. Will Denosyl help him?

Acute hepatic intoxication is the main suspicion, considering the signs you reported. Denosyl (SAMe) will protect liver cells from further damage and death and it will certainly help to detoxify the liver. It is important to monitor ALT and AST, but clinical improvement is even more important. So i think that he is already improving, since he is eating and surely he is brighter than onset of the signs. My dog has liver and kidney disease. What diet can help him?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I am sorry to hear that Lio is suffering from liver and kidney disease at such a young age. The most helpful treatment Lio could receive right now would be IV fluids for hydration. This will also help diurese him to flush out any potential toxins from his blood. With his age I would be concerned that the cause is a toxicity from him eating something possibly. Denamarin is a good liver supplemw t and getting him to eat a critical care formula food such as Hills A/D is good. If an abdominal ultrasound has not yet been performed, I would consider having that done for more information. I hope this helps and that Lio improves soon.
