Does hydrolyzed protein help a dog's liver with hepatitis & urinary diet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 11 years and 6 months old | 19 lbs

Hello. My 11 year old Dachshund mix has hepatitis for years. He has to be on a urinary diet for previous bladder stones. I was wondering because he has been having soft stool issues on and off if I can give him Royal Canin Multifunction Urinary + Hydrolyzed Protein to see if his stools improve. He is already on a probiotic and pumpkin. I guess my question is, does hydrolyzed protein help the liver or beneficial to the liver or does it hurt it further with a dog with hepatitis? Thank you.

Yes you certainly can get him on the Urinary and Hydrolzyed protein diet; however, this food does not help for any underlying liver condition. There currently is no a combo diet that will help with both urinary and liver problems. You may have to discuss with your vet and determine which disease you will focus on with diet and which can be treated with alternative treatments (i.e. Denamarin liver protectant). You may have to end up consulting with an internal specialist in order to find out the best way to manage both conditions.

Best of luck with your pet Malcolm moving forward. Take care.
