Does hydrolyzed protein help a dog's liver with hepatitis & urinary diet?

Ho, I personally think the liver diet would be the best option. I don’t think the kidney diet will do any harm but it is not the best option. Hill’s L/D has high levels of l-carnicine and l-arginine that are important for the metabolism. You should also see an improvement in the liver condition thanks to Adenosyl supplementation. The appropriate diet here would be the urinary diet either Urinary S/O or Hill's C/D, and then placing your pet on a liver protectant medication to address the liver issues. The liver protectant medication is called Denamarin, and has to be prescribed by your vet. I would then consider getting your pet an abdominal ultrasound to better define what is specifically going on with the liver, so that we know what mode of therapy would be best to manage things going forward, because these values (ALKP, CHOL) can be changed by not just the liver, but also the gallbladder and adrenal glands. There are several excellent diets for liver disease in the market from Hills, Purina and Royal canin, among others. It should not matter if canned or dry. I would just choose whatever Tanner prefers. The most helpful treatment Lio could receive right now would be IV fluids for hydration. This will also help diurese him to flush out any potential toxins from his blood. With his age I would be concerned that the cause is a toxicity from him eating something possibly. Denamarin is a good liver supplemw t and getting him to eat a critical care formula food such as Hills A/D is good. The protein in the urine is unlikely related to the skin disease. It can mean several things. First, if she has a urinary tract infection, that will increase the protein level in the urine. If this is not the case based on the urinalysis, then I recommend a test known as a urine protein creatinine ratio to measure the exact amount of protein in the urine. If this ratio comes back elevated, then she will need treatment to help limit the protein loss in the urine as it is an indicator of kidney disease in a dog. I typically will measure blood pressure next and run bloodwork if it has not been done recently. Then I will start a medication. I hope this information helps!

There are prescription diets for dogs with liver shunts, for example by Hill's or Royal Canin, alternatively low protein food can be prepared at home. However, that being said, most commercial dog food diets have sufficient amounts of both and most dogs do not need supplementation. If your veterinarian thinks this will help, I would look at ordering the following product, which can be found online quite easily. Liver support medications such as Hepagen C as well as a low protein, low fat diet such as Purina NF, Hills L/D diet, or Royal Canin Hepatic Support diet can help as well. These diets are formulated especially for dogs that have liver problems such as liver shunts, and they make it easier for the liver to metabolize nutrients that are provided to the body. Pako will have a decreased live span without surgical treatment of this disease. He may live a few years without many problems, but the disease can become refractory, and the neurological signs may worsen over time. I hope this helps!
